Description
I'm trying to refine my style with less detail and a greater focus on appealing shapes. I'm enjoying this direction and I hope you do too!

I try to do exercises like these but I end up scrapping them because the faces don't look right. How do you by pass that?

Really the best advice I can give is to practice, keep drawing a lot of faces. Observe people and try to draw them, then try to exaggerate their prominent features. If you're drawing digitally, try flipping the image horizontally while you sketch as well, sometimes you'll notice certain things look strange when flipped and it's easier to correct them if you constantly flip the image.

The orange haired one is the main character. Girl on the far left has too long of a face to be the main character, old lady on the far right is too old, girl in the middle right looks too mean to be the main character.
