I agree there's a lot going on. The wreath idea is awesome, but something about the body and face... just loses me. The face is hard to understand, since it's got a lot of strange details, and the body (is it 3D or flat?) looks very... flat. I love the first stage, it just sort of loses me as it evolves.

Suggestions...
take the fake leafy eyes of the pre-evolution turn them upside down and use them as a moustache.
remove the current set of fake eyes and put the actual eyes in their place...
i find it a bit too busy as a design but i do like what you did there!
