Was anyone else confused about XANA after learning its history? Because from the sounds of it, XANA wasn't meant to be evil like it turned out to be.
Here's my reasoning behind this:
XANA is an AI that was originally created to essentially stop the plans of a government super-weapon from being accomplished. Whether this was successful or not, it's never known. But XANA was also used as the guardian program for Lyoko. A Guardian! And Aelita was hidden inside Lyoko to keep her safe by her father, the same person who created XANA. If her father believed that XANA would consider Aelita a threat, why would he place her in Lyoko where she'd be in basically just as much danger as in the Real World?
Also, consider Xana's tactics in Season 1 and the Prelude episodes. Yes, they are very basic, but for an AI designed to stop a super-weapon project, it really could have done a lot better to kill the Warriors than what it did. Most of XANA's tactics didn't even seem all that lethal. They seemed designed more to scare other people away and detour them from returning. And what was XANA trying to accomplish with these tactics? Keep Aelita in Lyoko. Where she had been placed by her father. So she would be safe. Instead of being an evil imprisoning AI monster, XANA seems more like it was trying to protect Aelita and keep her safe within Lyoko, viewing the people trying to materialize her and bring her into the Real World as a threat to that directive.
Granted, something may have happened that changed things and turned XANA evil. Its core programming became corrupted somehow. It viewed Aelita as a virus in Lyoko that needed to be purged (Don't see how that would have been the case, given previously stated reasons, but it is a possibility). I don't know, and it's never really explained how XANA got from A to Evil, and that is what confuses me. XANA just remained this tormenting monster throughout the series, without any real reason why it was this way.
Maybe the creators of the show hoped nobody would look too closely and just take XANA as a badass frightening villain under the typical 'AIs are evil and will eventually try to destroy all human life on Earth' shtik. Or maybe I'm just being nitpicky. Either way, I loved the series, but XANA's history just confused me.

I think that the creators were going on the "A robot/program capable of learning to the point of needing to destroy the human race because humans are bad" plot and that's probably why it becomes a villain. In the first season, Xana's monsters attacked everyone, including Aelita. (I forgot to add that Aelita woke up in a tower so Xana couldn't attack her earlier)
In the later season, Xana kept her alive because he needed her code to truly be set free.

alot actually, example, I noticed totoro's cameo in one CL episode, and I know that that director Also did Nausica, (another one of my favorites)
