Description
After much procrastination, I finally finished the final week of indragonsaur ’s Demontober challenge. I completed sketching Naamah and Valefar around Halloween, but only got a rough sketch of Samael. Believe it or not, I was actually indecisive about the final choice since he was a surprise prompt. I was hesitant if I wanted to draw Samael, the angel of death, or Samyaza, the leader of a group of fallen angels called the “watchers”. Eventually, indragonsaur just told me to go with Samael, so I did.
Naamah’s design was partially inspired by a GENZOMAN illustration, Albedo from Overlord, and Lilith from Darksiders (in addition, I gave her asymmetrical horns, as well as let one of them obscure her eye, which is a small detail I’m quite proud of).
Valefar was a little trickier. He’s described as a lion with the head of a donkey, but getting good reference images of the demon himself wasn’t as easy as I thought. Regardless, I managed to make one that seems satisfactory. His wings are inspired by his depiction in one of the Final Fantasy games, his fists are inspired by War’s gauntlets from Darksiders, his head is that of a Poitou donkey (which helps give a natural transition between his lion mane), and the body is inspired by a Wayne Barlowe illustration (complete with organ necklace).
Samael was someone I’ve always wanted to draw. Since his name means “venom of God”, I had to include the obligatory serpent imagery on him, then I thought why not make his halo an ouroboros? So I did just that (and also gave the snake four eyes just to give that otherworldly feeling). My main inspirations for his design includes his depiction in the games Painkiller, Super Ghouls n’ Ghosts, Darksiders, as well as Death from Dante’s Inferno and Malthael from Diablo III. I also like the subtle detail of his hood seeming to “blend in” in a way that makes it look ambiguous if that is a hood or actually his hair.
