Description
The Time Burial. The inspiration for this picture is the 1982 animated film 'Time Masters'. Designed by Moebius and directed by Rene Laloux. Growing up I loved the characters and melancholy tone.

LES MAITRES DU TEMPS ! What a masterpiece !
Too bad CGI buried most cells drawn/painted production in cinema (Not hating CGI, just regreting they mostly only do CGI now for animated movies).
Beautiful tribute you did here. The Jad et Yula siblings were my favourite characters back then !

Definitely!
I'm part of the 80s generation of kids who saw that and LAPUTA on BBC2. Very common starting point for British fans of animation, I still meet people who say they got into this stuff and sci-fi because they saw those BBC broadcasts.

I was barely 14 when they released the movie over here in France. I was somehow raised with Disney movies at the cinema though but can totally relate to this feeling of being attracted by this kind of "stuff" they used to show on TV back then, even if they were mostly japanese animes and series that were not all great (sadly) but still an excellent fuel for imagination. That's also part of how I was led to love SciFi and Fantasy.

Time Masters (uk title) especially though, what an incredible film. I like Laloux's other works (Gandaharr has some great ideas in it) but there's something about the Moebius involvement that really makes it magical. Also we got a really good British dub with quality BBC actors doing the voices- sadly it's not officially available.

Bad dubbing is often a major turn-off for many movies that are actually good. Too bad too many distributors consider animation as only for kids, don't really respect them and then produce low quality dubbing.
I thought they released a DVD of the film in UK as they did over here in early 2000's, didn't they ?

It was En france with English subs. I don't mind subs generally but the dub was really good and I'm attached to how the character's voices sound in it.
Another thing I watched loads as a small kid was the WARRIORS OF THE WIND version of NAUSICAA. It's an appalling edit with voice actors having to read the script with zero prep. Still stood out as having amazing design though.

I discovered WARRIORS OF THE WIND as an imported VHS in 1991 or 92 (I bought it because I though the cover was beautiful ! Sometimes a cover don't lie...!). I was not as good with English back then as I manage to do now but the designs and animation were fantastic indeed and I loved it. Then some years later they finally released NAUSICAA in its original edit and I saw how great and not just good it was ! Too bad a "friend" lost my VHS in the while, I would have loved to see it again to compare the two versions after I bought NAUSICAA in DVD.

I have WARRIORS OF THE WIND on 1980s betamax format cassette. I don't have a player though. The story is seriously cut about, several characters are merged together and the story about the Sea of Corruption actually cleansing the earth is cut out. I highly recommend the manga, it's incredible.

Right. I have the manga (French edition of course) and love it but I miss the colours of the movie though.
Keep your betamax cassette safe : it's a priceless treasure in its own way !

I can totally relate to this !
Sadly, one can't buy everything ; and sometimes it can become even heartbreaking...

This was in a time when people didn't buy videos, they rented them. My mum borrowed my uncles' betamax and dubbed it after me and my brother kept asking her to rent it again.

You're a lucky guy then ! Our mother would never have done that for my brothers and I : she never understood SciFi and Fantasy genres, so she dislikes then because she thinks they're just silly nonsenses. I was lucky enough with friends though who provided me with books, comics and graphic novels I could not keep at home.

That's a shame; my mum always encouraged me to draw and read books and comics and stuff like that.

She encouraged me to draw.... But when the subjects were too much out of her tastes, her comment was "Yeah... It's well done, but you know it's not what I like". She is a good mother on many matters but as soon as it touches creativity and arts, she was and still is is very old-fashioned and pretty narrowminded.
Haha ! Now I sound like an angry teenager !

Cool, I like the retro sci-fi surreal look of this. Almost like a poster.
