Description
Thanks for the DD!My mom went to pick up some neglected horses to take them to their new homes. When she arrived, this little orange kitten ran up to the truck to greet her. The entire time she was there, he would follow her around and every chance he got, he would try to get in the truck or the trailer. Eventually the owner of the property asked if she wanted to take him home. She reluctantly agreed. This poor little thing was absolutely COVERED in fleas. He was hungry and had some sort of eye infection. Here he's all wet because we gave him a bath to help with the fleas. Since he was too young to use your regular flea control, we ended up picking the stunned fleas off of him by hand xD
As it turned out, there were 3 more litters of kittens where he came from. One of the owners had been putting the kittens in a crate and leaving them in the woods to die to take care of the "cat problem." My mom and her friend were able to organize a rescue and we got all of the kittens out of there. So far, they've all found new homes (including Savvy's sister Lyra, who we decided to keep as well) except for 2 of the smaller kittens. If it wasn't for Savvy insisting to go home with my mom, then all of those kittens probably would have died. Go Savvy!
As a side note, since this picture was taken Savvy has been dewormed and the rescue we were working with gave us a tube of flea/tick control for kittens. His eye infection has also cleared up. He's the biggest, fattest, most mischievous kitten out of the whole bunch. If anyone lives in the South Carolina area and is interested in adopting the last 2 kittens, let me know! One is a muted calico who was born with a deformed ear. She is VERY thin, but oh so playful. The other is a sweet little brown tabby with white paws. She loves to be cuddled. The remaining 2 along with Savvy and Lyra are having the time of their lives in our barn! We transformed one of our empty stalls into a kitty play room and they loveeee to irritate my adult cats when we let them have the run of the place.
Update: All kittens have found homes!

Aw, such a sweet little thing and Savvy is a wicked name! I'm glad they've all found good homes with loving families. I'd love to take one, or even both, on myself but sadly I'm in the UK
Anyway, this is a lovely stock image . Excellent work, well deserving of a DD.

Aww, that's adorable!
What happened to the people who did that to the cats? I sincerely hope the sick bastards got punished for it.

We decided not to rat them out to animal control. For one thing, animal control around here is REALLY corrupt and probably would not have done anything. The woman we got the rescues from had been trying really really hard to put weight on her horses and she just couldn't do it, so she surrendered them to us. The cats belonged to her mother-in-law. The horse owner was actually doing everything she could to keep the kittens alive, but the mother-in-law was resistant. It was kinda complicated, but now the lady knows that she can give any future kittens to us and we'll take care of them.

It's weird that an animal rescue group would be corrupt; you'd think that only empathetic people would go into that line of work because they'd actually care.
Anyway, it's good to hear any future cats will be taken care of!

We reported a horse trader who had 9 emaciated thoroughbreds and the lady who headed up animal control wouldn't do anything because she "knew him and he was such a nice man." She then proceeded to tell everyone that my mom was on a witch hunt and spread the rumor throughout the town. Needless to say, the woman got a verbal beating from one of the major animal rescues in the state xD Ever since then, we haven't bothered to call them and just handle problems ourselves.

I don't suppose there's a spay/neuter program to eliminate the problem? I'm sure there's only so many kittens you can care for?
We have a pet abandonment problem here too... the people should be left to the elements for a while so they see what it's like!
Props to your family for helping!

There is, but the owner just refuses to get it done. The rescue we work with has been able to home the kittens pretty quickly. Hopefully they will be able to come get the last 2 soon and home them. For now we're managing quite well. We took one of our empty stalls and turned into kitten paradise xD

So they just like adding to the animal suffering problem. Niccceee...
I know people like that though... sad.
Glad you were able to do something- and that homes could be found! Most people would rather pay 1K for an inbred purebred or mill animal than rescue a find animal here. Pathetic.
I need to get back into resucing but I get severely depressed when animals pass away... which in that line of volunteering... isn't good.

Yeah, a lot of people where I live are uneducated about this kind of thing. We have packs of feral dogs running around and so many cats. Luckily, we haven't had an animal die on us yet but given the conditions of the neighborhood, it wouldn't surprise me if we got one in that was beyond saving.

Poor kitten - glad you rescued him!
I hate, despise, and abhor people who mistreat their animals. I hope someone turned these bozos in?
My ex's second wife (whom I often call my sister-in-law - we're great friends) has enough emotional damage from a bad childhood that she can't hold a steady job, but she's braver than I am where it counts; she works for one of the animal-rescue organizations that deals with creatures saved from floods and other natural disasters, as well as the horribly starved and brutalized animals at puppy mills, cat-hoarder households, and other forms of human cruelty.
I don't have the strength to do that myself; by my dozenth starved kitten or broken-spined old dog I'd pick up a gun and take the asshole owners out.

Awe. I've got a gray one that we found in the woods that someone had abandoned. Had the same flea problem and was a rack of bones. She ended up having some brain damage from it, too.
She looked exactly like that one except in a different color.
Very cute with a great story.

A very nice picture of a truly adorable cat.
My family are big cat lovers, and this story was very nice. I think Savvy knew he'd be loved and treated well if he came to you and your mother. Cats are surpisingly smart. One of mine waits for me on the porch when I'm coming home from work.

Oooooh kitties! <3 So glad to hear this rescue story, as my own cat was a rescue I adopted after finding her, nearly starved and for some unknown reason partly shaved, a few weeks after the students moved out of my college town. She was already spayed and declawed, and has the sweetest nature anyone could ask for. Why someone would have just left her like that is beyond me, especially since she wouldn't have been able to fend for herself AT ALL.
Good luck finding the other two kittens home! <3

It's horribly sad that people can be so heartless towards animals, but it's people like you and your family that give them some ounce of hope. I hope that with this DD and all the exposure, the last two kittens will find loving homes!

When I read that story, it really struck me because that's the exact story of my cat Tiger. We met her in an alleyway and like Savvy, she was covered in fleas. They didn't have flea control for kittens back then, so we had to give her baths to kill them. She was also so young that she needed to be bottle fed. We didn't think she'd make it.
Last week we had to put her down... but she was 15 years old. She lived a long, happy life with people that really cared for her, when we didn't expect her to make it at all.
Thanks for not giving up on Savvy. Congrats on the DD.
