Description
alrite...so apparently dA got some sorta new category specifically for fanart? 'bout time. but...nothing for comics? ;_; now i gotta go back and edit the previous categories !@#%#anyway...what does the title read? reddescent? reticent? hotel Radisson? no...the red's raph, d'oh. it's his descent. descent into wut? i have no effin clue ahha...just some random concept that hit me on a drive home and it latched onto my brain like some insidious leech.
this sorta stuff here is closer to my usual style of painting no? i thought i'd depict at least one of the turtles in my usual style...with the other three soon to follow. whatever soon means for me anyway.
thanks in advance for any horrific insults to my intelligence!

NICE WORK!....however, it kinda looks like he's ascending to me. Like we are on the bottom of the ocean floor and he is floating upwards to the surface. I love it!

Well... several things, but right off the bat, the foreshortening just doesn't make sense at the ankle. (The hip is another thing, but for now you can let that slide).
At first, it looks like the left leg is going BACK by the way you shade it, but then you make it seem like it's coming forward by the foreshortening of the foot, which is unnaturally contorted, like is trying very hard to bend his foot inward towards his knee. So basically, the "foreshortening" on the foot DOES NOT MATCH that of the leg.
Show less of the sole of the left foot and more of its top. Either that or foreshorten the leg a little more. (i.e. if you want to show that much sole, we should see more calf and less thigh, with the knee looking relatively closer to the body.)
Overall, I think that sums up what feels "wrong" -- Raph looks way too tense considering he is unconscious and underwater. Raph is out cold, so think limp -- the extra-twisted foot would never happen by accident. Right now, he looks like he is straining to arch his back. His head is way back -- the head wouldn't do that by accident unless someone is actively trying to reach his back with the crown of his head -- or unless it is whiplash... which doesn't make sense to me as a swimmer for twelve years. Water acts sort of like a cushion in that it supports the body more than air, so there should be lots of resistance against whatever force drove him under.
Sorry, I'm getting tired. Hope you could make some sense of that. When all else fails, it helps to use reference.

well i've tried fixing the foot problem. short of a complete paintover of that foot (cuz i stupidly merged the entire composition of him onto a single layer) this is the best i could achieve!
but what about the hip? i can't honestly tell what's wrong with that...mm...is it too narrow?

Hwanggeum-Yong In reply to luminoire [2007-05-15 22:18:28 +0000 UTC]
Um... *freezes in panic*
Which... foot... did you "fix" just recently?....
When I said left foot, I meant RAPHAEL's left foot, and his LEFT leg. The right leg and right foot were by and large, fine.
Before I say anything else, which leg did you alter?

luminoire In reply to Hwanggeum-Yong [2007-05-16 01:28:03 +0000 UTC]
i was sort of expecting a response like this...since it's often hard to tell what was fixed over what wasn't unless you have a copy of the original for comparison.
but his left foot was fixed. if you notice, now there's light visible where it should be near his foot, towards the lower end of his calf and his left sole is also visible. that aside, there's also slight ambient light bouncing off of the bottom (visually) side of his left sole, meaning it's not bent upward anymore.
i did nothing to alter the thigh or shape of calf themselves because i honestly can't tell what's wrong with them.

Hwanggeum-Yong In reply to luminoire [2007-05-16 02:49:02 +0000 UTC]
Ah... so the coloring is all you are altering at this point. I see...
In that case, I'd leave it alone. Honestly, you've gone this far with developing the idea already.
We can quibble about the legs, but there's not much more you can "fix" if you're only going to alter the lighting and color. Raph's inner left toe should be towards us a little more (that is, bring it down a little so it obscures the right toe, which you should move up in a likewise manner.) This in effect actually rotates his foot slightly--damn I gotta go. I'll be back in a sec!

luminoire In reply to Hwanggeum-Yong [2007-05-16 03:32:36 +0000 UTC]
mm, i'll try that
well yeah i would leave it alone but these things drive me insane, especially when it comes to anatomy because i'm workin on it, since i used to rely too heavily on references. but since this will be essentially part of a series (im obsessed with series) of the four of'm in this style, i wanna get this all right before i move on, if that makes any sense.
but thanks for your input!

luminoire In reply to Hwanggeum-Yong [2007-05-12 09:18:20 +0000 UTC]
mmmm i just caught that...i was actually looking at it a moment before you made this comment and thanks to your affirmation...i now know light is hitting his left calf in all the wrong places...making it seem like his foot is sorta detached (or forcefully bent inward).
yeah he is stiff...cuz i had a lot of trouble figuring out how to get him into that sorta pose without making his shell bendable or summin. but i gotta admit that im unfamiliar with people (or turtles) falling through water...so that was a learning experience. although, i hadn't intentionally made it seem as if he's unconscious or out cold. more like he's been hit hard and the moment he plunged into waer, he's trying to make sense of where he's headed...if that made sense. strange scene i've picked, i know...ahah.
and uh no sweat, it made perfect sense. i'll be fixin that tomorrow after i get off work...thanks much!

Looking forward to the other turtles, considering how awesome this one is. I love the weapon arrangement, it's just perfect.
