Description
Edit: Took the original speedpaint (left) and finished it up into a more serious portrait .Pretty cool to see the transition, isn't it?? c:
---------------
...
Ugh.
I love Sesshomaru so much, but he's SO DIFFICULT to render.
It's almost impossible to make him look manly. -.-
The original speedpaint took about twenty minutes (I had to keep fixing his lips ... and finally I just gave up).
(Part of the reason I edited it into a "serious" portrait was to show that I actually CAN make him look manly. I CAN!!! X'3 )

Hahah I don't watch/read Inuyasha but I always thought Sesshomaru was a girl when I first saw him anyway, I think he looks fine without manly qualities It's cool seeing both of these side by side! I love how polished and smooth your final colors are, but I also tend to be drawn to the roughness and movement in sketches - they both look great!

Same here! I'm not like ... an anime "buff" per se ... but there are a few that have touched my heart over the years (like InuYasha and Princess Tutu). I have some friends who are truly anime fans, and have watched SO MANY of them ... 90% of which I've never even heard of ... and sometimes I'll start watching one of the series they recommend me, only to become overwhelmed and stop. x.x;;; I tended to watch anime more when I was younger, and would immediately turn on Cartoon Network and watch Toonami after I got home from school ... so it was a product of my default environment (and therefore it's quite easy to see which anime I'm familiar with; the ones that filled up the after-school block on Toonami! X'3). I think I can still name all of them, actually ... ... >.< ... Sailor Moon, Ronin Warriors, Gundam Wing ... then Zoids, Dragonball/Z, G-Gundam, and Rurouni Kenshin. And I suppose Pokemon goes in there too ...!!
... HERP DERP.
ANYWAYYYY I'm glad you like my rough sketches and polished work!!! ♥

Definitely! I'm a big fan of anything by Satoshi Kon or Naoki Urasawa, and I love Fullmetal Alchemist (the manga and newer series). It's one of the biggest inspirations on my own comic writing! I know a few people who've seen a ton too, and I've enjoyed some of the ones I watched with them, but most of the time I feel like it's rehashed work - the same cliched character types, same jokes, predictable plots. I do have a list of Japanese shows I need to watch in the future though! Mostly dark sci-fi work as I'm not into fantasy or shoujo, lol.
Oh mannn I miss watching Toonami, mostly for shows like Teen Titans and MEGAS XLR AAAH. Zoids was so cool. And still a fan of the old first Pokemon season! I've been watching the episodes again when I get time! Had friends try to get me to go to anime cons though and I'm like I DUNNO WHAT HALF THIS STUFF IS *feels lost* Glad to see any of your work

YESSS so you understannnd. Hahaha!!
FMA rocks. I'm not familiar with much of it personally, but I've had lots of friends who adore it (and have therefore informed me about it in depth). And the whole "anime that feels rehashed" thing is pretty common, I think; especially when you get into the "genres," like "harem animes" and whatnot with the single male character surrounded by various females that are trying to get into his pants. X'3 Very silly indeed.
HOLY POOPS TEEN TITANS OH GOD I LOVED THAT SHOWWWW AHHH .... They were all so wonderful ♥
And I have to say that Zoids got me going on the whole mecha-genre of anime ... I lovvvve giant robots ... X'3 ... and POKEMANZZZ *seizure* ... seriously, who doesn't love Pokemon? Liars. Liars who lie about not loving Pokemon. X'D
I've never been to an anime con, but I'm SURE that's how I'd feel ... o.o; ... I need a friend who'd drag me to one in the first place!! I think my friend Kelsey would go with me ... and probably Guy or Chris ... But ... yeah, I've never been yet. So I guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. X'3 ... I hear that they're fantastic places to sell art though! Which is definitely something I should look into ... ;3;
BLAH I'M GLAD TO SEE YOUR WORK TOOO ♥

LOL yeah, I read through Love Hina once, and that's the only harem style story I've read. The characters were really predictable and bland XD FMA was pretty amazing though! If you ever get to it I recommend either the manga or newer animated series, it was pretty long though D:
Teen Titans was AWESOME. I love all of the lead characters, really enjoyed Cyborg and Beast Boy.
ROBOTS IN GENERAL ARE AWESOME. I need to rewatch Big O sometime, and I still haven't gotten to watching any of Evangelion.
Hahahah we can drag each other to a con and be lost and confused. :V I've gone to a comic con but never anime before, I'd likely have fun buying stuff in the artist alley! I think selling would be fun too!

I did notice! I'm so pleased you thought my advice good enough to use! And he looks fantastic. I love the way you did his markings, especially around his eyes. Gods, I could stare into those eyes for hours. The only thing that would stop me is fear of decapitation via poison whip XD

Oooh, lookit that sexy muthafucka!
He looks good, I think you've made him more manly than lots of other renderings of him I've seen. While I agree he doesn't look manly in a 'human' kind of way, he still looks...ethereally manly. I guess I can only say that on demon standards, I imagine he is very manly.
Sort of like with elves! Their entire race is meant to be tall and slim, and their males don't look 'human' manly - they're elfin manly! If you drew Sesshoumaru's mother, I can safely bet that they would contrast each other and you would see more of Sesshoumaru's manly characteristics in comparison.
As it stands, if you want him to look more manly by 'cartoon' standards, put less details in his lips. Drawn men generally don't get such high attention paid to their lips because they are considered a very sexualized female trait. Like nipples.
You could also make his eyebrows thicker. I know they're rather thin in the manga, but men are traditionally held to have thick eyebrows. Otherwise, I see no reason to consider your rendering unmanly. I think it is fantastic.

You want to hear a sad sad story?
I pulled this painting out earlier today and started to edit the file, taking the time to make it a "real" painting instead of a speedpaint ... and my computer crashed and took all my hard work with it. x'c It even teased me and said it was going to save the file in a recovery folder, but it lied.
Also: ALL THE THINGS YOU SAID. Yes. So many times yes. He may not be what we'd consider manly (especially since we're insignificant mortals, who have limited comprehensions of such things as true beauty) ... but for a demon, I'm sure his appeal is undeniable!! (... in fact, his appeal seems undeniable to anyone ... X'3).
AND YESSSSSSS ELVES OH MY GOD I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU MENTIONED THIS!! True story: Every time I start drawing Sessho, I think about elves!! Specifically how I imagine Tolkien elves. Slender, more delicate looking, long-limbed ... tall and slim indeed! And I LOVE Inu Mama so much ... she's gorgeous ... ♥.♥ ... I'm sure that as I continue to practice drawing Sesshomaru again, my skill will increase ... I've never actually drawn him digitally before (not seriously, anyway), so it's a new experience! One that I'm enjoying immensely ... c;
Good advice about the lips and such. I constantly struggle between the thought of making my style more cartoony, or attempting to be more "realistic" and shy away from the anime look. It's really hard (perhaps impossible) to blend the two together, and that's probably where I'm going wrong. @.@ And my love of man-lips is probably not helping ... !!!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR KINDNESS MY LOVELY!! ♥ Blahh I appreciate your feedback SO MUCH oh my god. I love you. X'3
In the meantime, I will cautiously re-open Corel and attempt to edit this painting again ... because I love it and I want to get him PERFECT ... and also I'm a perfectionist ... which complicates my life WAY too much!!! c'x

^^^^That's me! Lol.
But oh man, I HATE when that happens! I was working on my packaging project the other day, and the file crashed just when I got it to look the way I wanted, and my first thought was: "OH GOD WHEN IS THE LAST TIME I SAVED????" Thankfully it hadn't been that long before, but I still had a lot to redo when I reopened the file XD
Here come the compliments, because I really think he's gorgeous as is.
I find your Sesshoumaru really freaking manly and ethereal. If I saw him in real life like this, I would be in awe, and definitely feel that he is out of a human's league. I can't imagine even approaching this Sesshoumaru. He's godly in the way he glows and his neutral expression. His eyes glow, and are surrounded by his markings in such a way as to truly enhance. They're not just there, they are painted on as if to resemble the true way that markings are on animals. Like brush strokes. I especially like the touch of yellow on his lower lid - its a new addition, but really adds to his features.
Now to follow up on some critique.
If I were you I think I would bring his cheek markings up so they accentuate his cheekbones rather than the hollows of his cheeks. They just feel too low on his face, and are acting more to direct your eyes to his lips than anything else. Also, to make his lips more manly but still pay attention to them, make them less warm. I find a lot of the time that women's lips have more of a natural blush than men's, if you understand what I'm saying. Men's tend to just be a darker shade of their skin, while women have more red in their lips.
But I really like this! I hope what changes you make don't change the inherent ethereal manliness he currently has.

OH MY GOD YOU HAVE AN ADORABLE KISSY ICON ... YOU ARE CLEARLY MY IDOL.
I kept saving the picture obsessively today as I was editing it ... X'3 ... And I think it turned out better than the OTHER edited version, so I can't complain!!
I'm so incredibly flattered by your compliments, you have no idea. First of all, it's so HARD to draw him ... so any positive feedback is MUCH appreciated ... and second of all, YOU NOTICED ALL OF THE THINGS I WANTED TO PORTRAY!! c': ... *weeping* ... I mean, I'm sure you understand this as a fellow Sessh-fan, but making him ethereal and terrifyingly beautiful is my sole purpose whenever I draw him (because I feel like that's the only way he can be accurately represented). And every time I draw him, I think about new things I want to include to make him look more "authentic" (like the markings on his face looking like they are a part of his skin, instead of paint, etc.).
I was playing with some awkward perspective in the speedpaint (like maybe he was looking up at the viewer, but since he was looking down, that kind of failed!) ... and obviously abandoned that in the edited version. The markings were WAY too low on his face; you were absolutely right! I moved those up and moved his ears down a bit, and gave him a longer neck (to accentuate that long-limbed idea) ... and I think it didn't detract too much from the original concept. I'm personally really happy with how it turned out (and it takes a lot for me to say that! My inner perfectionist cringes at the slightest error in my art!). I felt really "on" when I was editing him; like my art-making mojo was turned up to 200%! X'3 (Do you ever have days like that?? ... I also have days where I feel like my mojo is cranked down to 15% ... x'c)

I have a kissy icon! I have TWO kissy icons!
SO I CAN KISS EVERYONE, MWAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA. Twice!
That's the power of being part of critiques for four years, hahahah! You notice a lot more XD And you pay more attention to the way parts play with the whole.
I definitely think there was HUGE improvement between the sketch and the completed drawing. I still love the original concept, but that's what it was, a concept. You took your first concept and turned it into a completed, improved piece.
I know exactly what you mean! XD After a long day of school I feel little to know creative mojo, and same thing in the morning. I do my best work between 11 and 5. Any other time I need some serious motivation to do work.

.... OH MY GOD YOU ARE INCREDIBLE AND I BOW TO YOU.
Oh yes, critiques. They make such a difference; not only on your art, of course, but on your outlook about it, too! I just adore critical feedback ... to the point where it's so funny to me to see young budding artists getting so OFFENDED about feedback ... (which happens all too often on the internet). And I remember a time when I didn't take criticism too well either! Granted, I kept my feelings to myself, because I was too shy to even "defend" myself ... X'3 ... but if more people would just suck up their pride and take a good critique, they'd find their art improving SO MUCH MORE than it would if they just kept doing what they were doing. *sigh*
THANK YOU SENSEI. I worked so hard. ♥ And since the purpose of concepts is to inspire completed pieces, I believe I achieved success!! Not to mention some fine comments on your part, my dearie ♥
I'm currently having a creative mojo crisis ... it's left me. For the past couple of days, I've been lamenting with my friend about how I have no inspiration, even to complete pieces I've already started ... I'll pull out a piece and just slump over and feel like poo about it. :'c It is so horrible!!

see03 In reply to Luminosion [2013-02-10 23:25:53 +0000 UTC]
I can admit to not taking feedback well in the past - and to an extent, that is still true today. The biggest issue on the internet is you get snobs that claim to be giving 'creative critique', but they're really just insulting your work, and those are the things I find most people blow up about (I know I would. I heavily defend my work if someone is clearly just trying to pick it apart and be horrible about it). True creative feedback makes suggestions but also makes compliments, and lots of critics just don't get that. And then they call the artist babies or insults them not taking the critique well. So annoying.
Well, maybe it will inspire you to know that you inspired me to do three drawings, and they are actually for you How's that for some inspiration?

Ow man, after re-watching the four movies I remembered how much Sesshoumaru is a team player. Yeah, provided that team consists of one person.
I think he looks really good for a speed paint Like if I were to do a speedpaint it'd end up as a horrible mess of lines with a color blend that looked like someone just vomited all over it. And I don't think he really needs that manly emphasis in him, more of the quiet loner no one should mess with kind deal.

He's got some major daddy issues ... that's for sure ... X'3 I like to think personally that the whole point of his existence as a character is to show how, sometimes, you need to rethink your perception of what matters in life; like, perhaps ultimate strength is not something you should crave most of all. Perhaps caring for others' lives is more important. Perhaps becoming more powerful is unnecessary, and learning to embrace kindness and gentleness is the best kind of power. c': ♥

Like you said, it's all about the perception.
