Description “Why are they doing that?”  Rex was clearly quite confused, staring around at some of the games and squinting.  “It’s clearly rigged, you can see the support for it right there!  It’s all a scheme, it’s always a scheme.  It’s designed to milk money from those who struggle to-”

“Yes darling, it is.  However a lot of these people do it for fun, and some do it because they know just how the scheme works.”  Pearl seemed a little long suffering at this point, who knows how many ‘schemes’ he’s already had to listen to about in just the last half hour.  Rex was standing so close to him, he felt both excited and slightly claustrophobic even with it being Rex someone he cared so deeply for.

The problem here was Rex in public spaces.  He was frightful in situations where they had to cross a crowd they didn’t have to interact with, but here with people that talked to him when they wanted to do something?  If Pearl didn’t love him quite to death he’d probably have gone home.  As it was however this was somewhat of an exposure therapy for Rex, and he was going to see it through.

Taking Rex anywhere with this many people was liable to end in misery and panic, so Pearl had plotted a very careful path without alerting Rex that he was doing so.  Rex hated feeling like a burden, and worst feeling like he was weak, so making sure he was completely oblivious was all a part of the plan.  And it was working, Pearl had spied more than one little smile on his face and they were even holding hands at this point.  PDA was something Rex didn’t do so that was definitely a win in his book.

Unfortunately he had to avoid the games, which was a pity because he was sure he could have bribed his way into looking like a champion and winning a very cool boyfriend impressing giant plushie, because of Rex’s take on money.  Seeing just how he reacted unfortunately sealed that deal as well.  Still, his journey was going well and he knew his goal was just around the next corner.

“Look, darling, the ferris wheel.  Didn’t you say you wanted to feel far away from them all? There’s your chance, come on let’s try it.  Please?”  Pearl turned on him as soon as the wheel was in sight and stood in front of him in his best, cutest, and most ‘oh honey please?’ pose he could muster.  “I think the lights will look amazing from above.”

He could see Rex falter.  Money would be involved, it would have to change hands.  What would he do? Would he let Pearl pay for him? Would he straight up deny him? Better pout his lip a little further and squeeze his hands together just a little harder to win him…

“Okay, okay fine.  But you know I don’t-”

“Perfect! I’ll buy us two tickets, lets go!” Pearl happily grabbed his hand and tugged him forward to the ticket booth.  This was going to be wonderful!  He already had a secret planned just for this very moment and trying to get him to come along to this was all a part of his scheme.  Yes, he was the one scheming this time. It had to be perfect, it had to.

It took a few minutes of waiting in line, almost 20 minutes of trying to keep Rex calm and keep him from bailing, and a few more minutes of waiting for everyone to load up onto the carriages.  It would be worth it, it was going to be worth it…

Finally they were moving, the wheel was spinning slowly once or twice around and Rex seemed truly fascinated for a bit.  Good, let him get into a more positive mood now that they were all alone and they could be together.  Once he seemed quite happy and excited Pearl made his move, he reached for a little box somewhere hidden in his bag and cleared his throat to talk to Rex.

“Rex I, I have something important I want to ask you.  I-” Rex turned to him and stared, expression confused once more but still smiling and happy.  “Rex—” But before he could speak again there was a terrible terrifying creak.  There was screaming, shouting.  People were running all over the place and Pearl could feel his stomach hit his throat.  It wasn’t even the nerves, they were falling.

However for all his fears and anxieties in that moment Rex was the one who seemed able to do something, for once while Pearl was the one who couldn’t speak and he felt himself giving into fear. He didn’t want to- this couldn’t be the end.  Not before he could tell him!

“Hold onto me!” Rex grabbed the stunned boy and hoisted him against his chest, lifting both of them up against the top of the carriage and leaning all of his weight against a corner of it before leaning them back.  Beams and supports were bending and snapping around them however he seemed convinced that everything would be fine.  He smiled down at Pearl and brushed his hair out of his eyes, holding eye contact and not letting him go.  “It’s okay, it’s okay.  We’ll be down soon.  I have you.  You’re safe with me… Darling.”

Truth be told the event lasted only a few minutes.  Nothing truly fell more than a few feet and the creaky wheel was brought back down to the ground with their carriage nestled safely between two of the supports.  It was hard to get them back out again but Pearl didn’t remember much of this.  Rex even did all of the talking, and carried him out of the carriage and into the crowd where emergency personnel were waiting.  He only left Pearl’s side for a moment when he was speaking to the police who had come to take statements.

As he started coming back out of it, the fear leaving his system well enough he could start loudly talking to a few of the workers about lawsuits and lawyers, Rex came back over again.  Seeing him dusting himself off from the dirt and the grime was enough to cause the tears to start.  His perfect plan, his perfect night.  It had been ruined.  He’d never get a chance like this again, nothing would be quite right.  He could feel the tears welling up and spilling over unable to stop them and Rex rushed back to his side, cupping his face and holding him.
“Hey, hey now you’re okay.  You’re okay!  It’s going to be fine, we’re safe now! You don’t have to-”

“No!  NO! It’s not fine!  Nothing is fine, everything is ruined! I wanted to- I wanted to— We could have died and if we had then what?”  Rex was silent for a bit at that, and he stared at the sky before reaching into his pocket and pulling out what looked like a small ring of metal, likely off the wheel itself.  It had been spray painted a beautiful silvery almost pearly color.

“No you’re right.  There are definitely things I need to do before I die.  One of them I’ll do here.”  Reaching for Pearls hand he held it against his chest and placed the oddly ring shaped bit of metal against his finger tip.  “I’m a mess, I’m not much.  I can’t offer you really anything worldly.  But you’re the ground I stand on and the light that livens my world.  Would you- even if it’s in word only, marry me?”

Pearl was stunned.  How could all of this night turn around on him so much? Everything he’d planned.  Everything so carefully laid out to lead up to a moment that Rex so casually and spontaneously decided on his own.  Pearl laughed wiping some of the tears away from his eye and grabbed for the box that he’d clutched a little too hard through the whole ordeal.  Finally he opened it up and revealed a shimmering little simple band.

“Only if you’ll have me too.”  Regardless he was already sliding that odd little bit of the machine that could have killed him, right onto his finger.
