Description (Click the pics for a bigger version and more detail!)

Here it is, finally, after weeks of work—one of my wolf masks, custom-fitted with a Necomimi brain wave-activated ear set! I just happened to have the right wolf face at the right time; most won’t fit the Necomimi headset correctly.

You can see a brief video of the set in action here; [link]

The entire set (Necomimi headset included) can be purchased here on Etsy: [link]

Lots of work went into this, but also lots of fun, and I’m pleased to finally make it public

(And yes, I WILL be customizing a tail once Neurowear makes them available; they just released video of a prototype, and I can\'t wait!)

While I'm not overly crazy with how large the eye holes are on this one, I must say I am loving the concept! I've seen them used upon a fursuit, but this almost looks a bit more believeable (with the exception of them trying to calibrate in the middle, wiggling back and forth hahaha)

I have a very large black wolf that I've shaped, I'm wondering if he's large enough for this to be done. He's from a 73-76 inch wolf I believe.

Also, as to your black wolf, I think the main thing would be to measure how big the space between the ears is, since the motor casings have to fit through just right.

Sharpe19 In reply to lupagreenwolf [2012-09-26 19:10:23 +0000 UTC]

The distance is about 4 inches.

it might actually work, then. It's about four inches between the motor casings.

Yeah, I saw the fursuit video on YouTube when I was trying to figure out how to categorize the demonstration video for this. I did have to make the eyes a little bigger than usual because of the increased distance between the mask and the face; if I make another I may experiment with shifting that some.

Although I admire your work it hurts to see the beautiful fur with these huge holes to see-through D': Maybe an closer to the head-shape would also have helped to make the fur look less than a pillow balanced on your head.

lupagreenwolf In reply to luthien368 [2012-09-26 19:18:03 +0000 UTC]

There are a few reasons for the design being this way. First, real fur doesn't work the same way as, say, fabric. It's not like making a fursuit where you can bend and shape the fabric as closely as you'd like to the contours you're working with; beyond a certain point, it'll warp out of shape, especially as the human skull is very different from the wolf skull this originally covered.

Additionally, because the headset sits at a particular point on top of the head, the ears on the wolf head have to be centered over that headset; because of the distance between the ears and the rest of the face, again that creates an unavoidable distance.

as to the eyes, I started making headdresses and the like from the perspective of someone who has worn them extensively in crowded dance and drum circles, and so visibility is absolutely crucial to people not getting hurt. So I generally cut open the eyes in my masks anyway, and this one had to be even a little moreso to make up for the distance between mask and face.

These are things I can work on if I do another iteration of this, but there are natural limitations that aren't found in, say, fursuiting.

Yea, I know, tried out shaping a furhead to my wishes already - crappy, aweful... beautiful stuff What helped was building a structure of a scull, with mesh or Wonderflex, and gluing / sewing the fur onto it.

Another idea: Why not shape the holes for the sight a bit like eyes? So rather than making round holes, make them more eye-shaped, that could make the whole thing look more like it belongs together?

One: Thank you ever so much for bringing Necomimi ears and the future tail to my attention. I fear I may have gone through life not knowing about them otherwise.

Two: This is an awesome use of the headset/mask! The video looked incredible.

Oh.My.GOD. I LOVE this! Would you ever make customs sets in the future? Like custom faces and a tail set once the tail is out? I would LOVE to get a black wolf version of this for cosplays and future Halloweens....Hell, I would just like to have it! xD

lupagreenwolf In reply to WolfHaunt [2012-09-26 02:36:24 +0000 UTC]

This may be the only one I make; it's very hard to find wolf heads that will fit the headset just right.

Hopefully you do, I want them myself and my b-day is a few days after Halloween. Maybe if I have enough money this year I can get them if you still have them.

I'd say I'm not sure how I feel about this, but since I know you talk to the critters you use... well, actually, I'm still kinda not sure how to feel about it, just not in the same sense of that phrase. LOL Neat and WTF at the same time. XD

Though having poked around for the tail video, pretty sure I'd MUCH rather have one of those than the ears, once the tails come out... now if the ears could swivel exactly where I want them and serve as auditory enhancement, that'd be different - but the swivel ears and tail, always kinda wanted them.

Actually, the spirit of the wolf was tickled to be able to move his ears again, even if it was more through my brain waves than his!

Lyrak In reply to lupagreenwolf [2012-09-26 01:25:25 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, makes sense... would love if they'd make a more canine version of those ears, though, since the movements are definitely more feline.

Cool! My future sister-in-law has a cat ear set like that (fake ears, but yeah XD ) and it was fun watching her ears move around while she was driving.

But knowing you usually work on pelts for ritual purposes, would that be safe/easy to wear if someone wanted to dance with it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lupagreenwolf In reply to pieladyUSA [2012-09-26 00:50:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, they're entertaining to say the least.

If someone were to dance with them i probably would recommend they put a bit of Velcro inside the ears and on the tips of the motor casings just as additional "hold", but other than that it holds up very securely, especially if you use the backstrap of the headset.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lupagreenwolf In reply to PersianButterfly [2012-09-26 00:51:13 +0000 UTC]

Well, if you can get the ears split apart they may slip over, but they need to be pretty good-sized ears to fit over the motor casings at the very least, adn the foam inserts only whittle down so far befroe you cut trhough them entirely.
