Description Thought I'd make a stamp about coyotes, because personally, I think they are cooler than wolves. Wolves are just overrated these days...

Don't get me wrong, I love wolves as well, but I just think coyotes are badass, and they don't get nearly enough attention.

I mean sure, they can be pests, but they can adapt to almost every environment, they can be just as gorgeous as wolves, especially those with black or orange/reddish coats, and their huge ears are adorable. Not to mention they're extremely intelligent and cunning.

There is a reason, afterall, that they're doing so well these days when other animals' populations are dwindling.

(The photograph I got off of google.)

Coyotes and wolves are hardly alike at all, aside from the fact they're both canines. Coyotes are a lot smaller for one, with larger ears and much thinner snouts. They also don't howl like wolves (mainly yips and barks), and unlike wolves, they live pretty much everywhere in North America. Not to mention, they can live near or even within human towns, whereas wolves aren't as adaptable and too large to do that. They've also got a pack mentality, but it isn't as strong as wolves'... they usually hunt in pairs.

They might look a bit similar to some people, but personally I think they look a lot different from one another, and while I like the wolf for its size and high pack mentality, I like coyotes because of their huge ears, cleverness, and adaptability.

You forgot to mention that they communicate differently. Aggressive wolves bare their teeth, while coyotes open their mouths, and arch their backs like cats do.

Well, I wouldn't say wolves are overrated...except by wolfaboos. I personally admire wolves, but not in any kind of mystical way. I admire them for their intelligence, mostly, because they are pack-hunters who are capable of making complex strategies, especially while hunting. Compared to coyotes, wolf-packs work together to make ends meet in a situation, whereas coyotes will run if the situation doesn't go as planned the first time around. Wolves are bigger and stronger, and in many ways more intelligent, but coyotes outrank wolves in their ability to adapt. Even though both coyotes and wolves have dominated the entire northern hemisphere in the past, in the onslaught of human development and the campaign against all wild canines, coyotes have managed to successfully adapt to urban/suburban habitats and evade human hunters and their traps. The result is that the coyote has a bigger, more stable population than the wolf, while the wolf has came to the brink of extinction.

There are modern myths of coyote/wolf hybrids in the wild, some looking like big coyotes, others looking like small wolves, but they are said to be both strategic pack-hunters like wolves and adaptive and skilled at evading humans like coyotes. It seems possible to me, and actually rather fascinating as well, but I have trouble imagining a wolf and coyote mating and producing cubs, since coyotes are scared shitless of wolves.

uuuhh, the only reason the wolves r on the brink of extinction is because people hunted them! and if it werent for wolves, dogs wouldn't be here! wolves were the first dog, bro .3.

I sometimes wonder if coyotes really are only native to North America. Take golden jackals for instance: are they really a seperate species?

Well, you can't really blame them. If you were a coyote I'm sure a cat would seem like an easy meal. It does suck of course, but I think I'd forgive them eventually if it happened to me.

They actually do While they might not be my favorite canid, they are pretty cute and a lot of people don't seem to even know they exist. I actually didn't even realize they were really canines until a year or two ago ><

I might actually make a stamp for them, too, even if there are probably more out there. I just can't stop making stamps this week, lol.

That reminds me of a shop owner I met at an anime convention who was selling coyote pelts. He said he had one, very large coyote and a hunter once came in asking for the "wolf pelt." When he said it wasn't a wolf, the hunter told him he's been out in the wild long enough to know the difference. So the shop owner said, "Okay it's a wolf. That'll be $800." The hunter said it sounded fair, and bought it. The shop owner told his wife that he wasn't about to call that good man a liar. So basically the hunter ripped himself off.

Don't coyotes have a "pack mentality"?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PrinceofPride In reply to Dark-Hyena [2012-08-09 22:31:39 +0000 UTC]

It doesn't seem as strong as with wolves, hyenas, or african wild dogs. From what I've heard and seen, their packs tend to be a bit shaky and not as stable.

Lupen202 In reply to Bear-hybrid [2012-08-08 20:18:26 +0000 UTC]

Well that's understandable, but I'm not sure if I'd hate them if I lost a pet to one. I'd be pissed for a long time of course, but I think I'd forgive the coyote eventually, lol. Though I can't really say because well, it hasn't happened, sense almost all of my cats have been indoors. But nature is cruel afterall, and I'm sure cats look like an easy snack if you're a coyote.

Like I said its a baseless emotional thing, his parents wouldn't let him keep the cats indoor only (because they are idiots) and that cat meant EVERYTHING to him.

Lupen202 In reply to Bear-hybrid [2012-08-08 21:09:48 +0000 UTC]

Aww, that does suck I don't understand why some people don't keep or allow cats to be indoors. Sure, they can get fur on everything but if you really value your furniture and the like more than an animals well-being, that speaks a lot about you IMO. Especially when the average life span of an outdoor cat is about ten years less than that of an indoor.

That sucks . Cats should always be kept indoors. They're notorious for killing entire bird species.

I'd be pissed if my cat got eaten.

I like wolves more just 'cause that's how I am, but still an awesome stamp, haha. I'm sure many appreciate it! Coyotes are so awesome though ^_^ Small enough to get away with being near humans without making cause for automatic execution or relocation (most of the time), yet clever enough to reap the benefits of living near humans. Not to mention they're adorable as can be, have awesome yipping howls (I miss being able to hear coyotes...whatever pack used to live near my parent's place must have left...damn development -_-; ), and they have the adaptability power to live wherever they feel like it.
