Description
Wendylady...From my journal:
She who so loved Peter Pan.
It is hard for me to write about sad, poor Wendy, who grew up. People who think Peter Pan is a happy children's book, you have missed it. It is fun, and playful, and rich with adventure, but it is also very sad. Peter Pan is a nasty boy who cannot love. Love is for those who sense the reality of mortality, of aging, of loss. Love is for those who wish to keep what they know one day must be lost. Peter never grows up, never has to lose his childhood, and because of that he is loveless and selfish. He nearly kills Wendy and her siblings merely from forgetting totally about them because he is not immediately interacting with them.
Dear sweet Wendy loves Peter, because her childhood is not forever, and she understands what must come. I'm not articulating myself well, but I cannot recommend this book enough, especially the last chapter, When Wendy Grew Up .
My one small comfort (which is not really a comfort, as it is sad and tongue in cheek like all the rest of the book):
But the years came and went without bringing the careless boy; and when they met again Wendy was a married woman, and Peter was no more to her than a little dust in the box in which she had kept her toys. Wendy was grown up. You need not be sorry for her. She was one of the kind that likes to grow up. In the end she grew up of her own free will a day quicker than other girls.

Every other adaptions of Peter Pan I've seen revolves too much around WENDY when most of them should revolve around the TITLED character himself, thus the name. Why is she so (more) important than Peter? What's wrong with him?

Oh! Your Wendy is so sweet! ^_^ And you're so right, there is so much to the book that gets overlooked. Well done! ^_^

It's actually quite tragic, I don't quite agree with the fact he's nasty and cannot love, more that he's a bit ignorant at times, and that he loves people, just possibly not the Romantic kind of love

Finally, someone gets it. I couldn't agree with your description more.
This is a deep book but people rarely get the levels
most people only get "I don't want to grow up!" out of the fandom, but that's not the lesson of the story..
There's so much more to it than that.

She kind of looks like me when I was Wendy this past Summer! And trust me, I completely understand how sad her story is. I've had the wonderful opportunity to be her twice, once in school a few years ago and once in the community show this past summer, and I don't think I've ever been closer to a character on the stage. I just remember our last show over the summer, and the last time I flew to Neverland, and said goodbye to Peter... I started to cry even before the lights went out after my last line.
So very lovely work, and lovely words.

This is so beautifully and very sad. I completely agree with you. I even wrote a small fanfic of mine own to express Wendy's feelings as an adult. If you like, you can vies it: [link]

Thank you for making this! Honestly it's one of my top pet peeves when people go, "Oh, aren't Wendy and Peter such a good couple?" I can't hate Peter because in many ways he is still a child, and as he refuses (not can't, refuses) to grow up he doesn't understand how to mature or love someone.
I've always thought that Wendy was the lucky one, actually. She was able to experience the best adventure of all: growing up. Because although we are all scared of change, Wendy chose to face it in the end while Peter was too afraid. In fact I've always thought the saddest part of the book is how everyone except Wendy forgets their adventures were real. (When Michael said, 'Perhaps there is no such person' I remember crying so hard)
I know, I'm rambling. But this is beautiful. Peter Pan is one of my all time favorite children's books (Right up there with the Alice in Wonderland/Looking Glass, and Winnie the Pooh series--now Winnie the Pooh had a really bittersweet ending). It taught me that although we all grow up someday and childhood is fleeting, that doesn't mean we can't look back upon it fondly and remember the good times we had as innocent and naive children who believed in things such as pirates, and fairies.
This is brilliant. Thank you for this. I am so glad to see someone else who has read the book and understands the beautiful and slightly tragic side to it.

You are completely right when it comes to your evaluation of Wendy. She and Peter are two of my favorite characters, and their story really is sad.
But I'm glad they exist, even if just in stories, because they make childhood more magical.
Love your drawing of Miss Wendy Darling.

Lovely but tragic. I'm glad you mentioned her growing up, and though that is sad , it is also beautiful. I adore her expression and particularly how you drew and accented light in her hair and eyes.

My school last year did that production of Peter Pan (I almost had the role of peter pan (not by my choice but by the choice of our drama teacher but I informed him about my singing frights on stage.)) and I played the role of Smee. (my first choice.)
ANYWHO! I really like how you've portrayed all these characters. A lot of people just see them as characters, when really they all have so much deeper meaning, and hidden characteristics. You captured them really well.

Definately. (: It a good story. Although the original is very sad. Wendy forgets Peter, I cried.

Yeah, I always have the gloomiest way of looking at things...! ;_;
Thank you! I'm glad you like it. I liked that the Disney version was brunette with curls, and I do like the blue nightgown, but I felt like so much about the character (and of course the whole story) was lost in that interpretation.

oh please keep doing these! i love reading what you have to say about these characters. Most people dont really look back at their favorite childhood books, they just say, "oh, i remember that" and never really look past the fun, kids story part, and deeper into the heart of the story.
she looks so sweet. I love the colors in her nightgown. very pretty.

I am really happy you enjoy these... ^_^ I love taking a deeper look at these kinds of stories, because of course adults wrote them, with adult knowledge and sorrows, even if they don't explicitly put them in the text. I don't know how many more peter pan pictures I can do though, Wendy and Tink are the two that interest me the most, though I thought about drawing Princess Tigerlily for completeness sake (since she had the hots for Peter too!). I'm afraid to draw Peter because I just don't think I'd get him right!

That's a very interesting take on Peter Pan. I think most boys suffer from Peter Pan syndrom. They can't love because they refuse to grow up.

I think that's true in a certain way. A lot of guys I've met don't want to really care about anything but themselves, so in that way they are childish. Then again, a lot of girls do that too, so who am I to judge?

True. Oh and thanks for putting that link to the original story by the way. Disney was waaaaaaaaay off but then that shouldn't surprise me. Disney is usually way off about everything.
