Description In some situations, wolves really appear very sapient indeed.
European wolves at the Sababurg park.

Update: Now available as A3 size print! I would never have thought that the overall quality of the offset print is actually better than a premium photo print (chemical) of the same image... but it is, clearly!

Might I ask what lens you used to take this shot? It's a crazy sharp image o_O I've seen you mention a mighty long lens a couple of times, but no further details.

I envy you, being able to capture such amazing moments =]

Lupinicious In reply to JazielValentine [2010-05-02 22:05:07 +0000 UTC]

Sure... it's been taken with a Canon 28-300 f/3.5-5.6 L IS USM at 300mm and f/5.6. And in fact this is just a rather small crop of a larger picture, that's why it's only suited for sizes up to A3.

So, no "mighty long lens", but it's doing the job

xD Damnit, now I envy you even more. May actually have to sell my kidneys now, lol. Considering this is a crop, that's even more impressive tbh >.< my stuff generally looks horrendous when I crop all that much, my lenses aren't anywhere near as crisp - or at least, I can't produce images anything like that.

Thanks for the reply ^^ I know what I've gotta save for now, lol.

Lupinicious In reply to JazielValentine [2010-05-02 22:35:26 +0000 UTC]

Well, the ability to crop is more due to the 21 MP of the 1Ds Mk III... without that, crops would look awful too This image still has 4 MP resolution.

I probably sound like an old fart now, but at your age, I was stuck with an analog Canon AE-1 with a rather crappy 50mm prime lens. And even 1 1/2 years ago, I still used my now 10 years old 2.1MP Olympus C2100UZ compact camera, so your equipment is definitely a lot better than most have at hands.

I think some of your photos are really good, and it looks like most are a bit blurry just because you take them at really slow shutter speeds... if you like, you can drop me a note and we can chat some more about this.

Ech, I use the 400d, which is of course rather less impressive xD but even smaller crops tend to bring out the softness of my focus. Doesn't help that at the moment I can't actually afford new glass xD so I end up buying damaged secondhand stuff. I can dream though

This time last year, I was using an Olympus that I can't even remember the model name of, 3.2mp, point and shoot. Was quite a shock to the system when I switched to the 400d, lol.

If you'd like to see some of my slighty less sucky photography, as I haven't actually uploaded any photography to here in a while, check out my Komplex Delyrium [link] account. Most of what's on this account is from when I first got my camera and was still figuring out how to use the damn thing xD

I'd like to think I'm a damn sight better than I was, but I've still got a long way to go. Should be getting some nice sharp vintage glass soon, if I can get the right adaptors and stuff, but I dunno. Got my eye on a big old Tamron 300mm prime, but I need a mount for it - and I don't really wanna buy until I've handled it properly and taken a few shots, see how it acts an' all.

And psht, don't worry about sounding like an old fart. I'm pretentious enough to do it to the people in the year below me at my college xD "Oh, you AS students, you don't even know what you're in for at A2..."

But you're right, that's one of the more lucky shots This yearling loves to climb on top of other wolves, so he's always a lot of fun to watch. Unfortunately, they usually do the most interesting stuff in a huge distance

Again, thank you for your kind comments, they are appreciated!

just telling the truth ^^ its hard to capture those moments because they come and go before you know it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lupinicious In reply to SkylosDog [2010-03-17 09:19:56 +0000 UTC]

I think that's the art involved with it. Being able to anticipate what's going to happen and when to take the picture requires a fair share of knowledge about the behavior of the species you are dealing with.

But still we are talking about hours of waiting and spending time with them - and only 1% of the photos are really good. And far less are excellent.

very true...i guess it boils down to patience and luck mostly and getting the animals to trust you ^^ but still you have some absolutely amazing shots

Yes, I was quite surprised too. *g* They were quite far away, so I couldn't see it in detail when I took it I just saw that last year's puppy climbed up on the other wolf... I love his facial expression.
