Description
Project from my pastels class. We had to illustrate or create an image based on a myth or mythology from any culture. So yeah...that only left about 20 billion options. I ended up just doing Garuda battling a naga/serpent. I kinda had fun with the naga's design XDI forgot his belly button. Noooooo!
Done all in pastels. Digital photo of the original.
I know there are a bajillion versions of Garuda, and I stuck with a really colorful, cutesy interpretation for this but its not really how I ever pictured him. I mean he had the jewelry and crown and long hair and earrings but I always drew him with more feathers, more white (instead of bright red and yellow wings), and different colored talons and beak. I made his head more bird like too because dammit human heads + beaks are HARD.
And those wings are a disgrace to humanity :{

I love your comment about the wings It is good to hear someone else criticize their work, but not overly so. Just being real.

LOL! Would Garuda have been born to have a belly button? XD Nice work; cool that you made the reptile look slimy too.

This is more amazing than I know how to say. o.o The wash even has that beautiful old antiquey look that the manuscripts have.

Nice to see mythological beings that others don't draw that much.
Human heads and beaks do seem awkward, but you did a good job on it.
I coudln't get that level of color and detail on my pastels, the stuff is too messy for me.

Eee, very neat. I love seeing Hindu-inspired art around...its myths are always overshadowed by other cultures'.
This has such a neat illustrative look about it. The Naga is excellent!

Great work! In pastel, it's fabulous, as it's such a hard medium if you want to correct anything...so,
, well done! I wouldn't worry about the navel thing...I don't ever give my angels & gods navels, because they were divinely created!!

Looks very much like an authentic indian painting. Your ability to capture a soft earthy-ness to your work has me entranced! (haha I sound so pretentious. But honestly, I love your artwork so much!)

the lines of the feathers on the wings on the right seem like red yarn improperly tacked up that has come undone and is starting to fall off :/
but it all blows my mind, specially for pastels!
i like how the texture of the paper adds to the surpent's skin and the patches of blue sky and clouds

your skill with pastels amazes me.
i've always thought that they were an incredibly hard medium to use, much less master, but you've done so well with contrast and depth...the shading looks so realistic.

cheese, this is some insanely detailed work. The shading is a standout feature, and i think you pulled off the humanface with beak alright.

Beautiful work!
I really love the serpent, who looks like somebody's little brother who is getting a big kick out of being irritating!
