Description
I've finally finished! There's a lot of details to go through so I'll go ahead and mention this one first- this is my entry for 's character creation contest .Episode: The Harvest Guardian's Wish
Name: Scarecrow/Scareclone/Sketchcrow (スケアクロー/スケアクローン/スケッチクロー)
- "Scarecrow" is what she's referred to when they didn't know she was sentient
- "Scareclone" is her monster name
- "Sketchcrow" is her new ("true") name, the name she gives herself to feel reborn again as a hero
Synopsis: A local farmer- tired of Kirby/monsters/kids/etc. tearing up his crops- hodgepodges together a scarecrow out of hay, fabric, and tools in an attempt to scare off the hoodlums trampling/eating his crops. The scarecrow is notably useless- it scares away nobody. After some mockery and catching Kirby eating some watermelons, Scareclone begins to punish the wrongdoers in the night when nobody is watching. To her, she wants to do the best job she can protecting the fields, thus why she eventually pulls the paint brush out of her head and begins her counterattack.
(Drawing inspriation from Amon the sheep, it is uncertain why Scareclone gains sentience. Was she born a demon beast? Was she made of leftover demon beast material lying around? Did the call of defending give her life? It is uncertain, but altogether not relevant. She just wants to be the best harvest guardian there is.)
Attacks: Real-life scarecrows have rods/stakes along their back and arms that would realistically prevent any pose other than a t-pose. Scareclone, however, is fairly flexible and her arms are extremely mobile. Her arms can freely attach/detach at the wrist, her freed hands and arms acting as separate appendages. She can bind, toss, and stretch Kirby or even lob her heavier (in comparison to her arms) hands, using her arms like a grappling hook. Using her paintbrush, she can paint Effigies to assist her. She can also use the paintbrush as a blunt instrument.
Effigy attacks: They're like mini versions of her, mostly, with brooms they beat up Kirby with. The effigies are about the size of Kirby. Kirby either swallows one of them or their brooms to gain the clean ability. They're proficient with brooms, though, so Kirby cannot beat Scareclone's army of Effigies with clean.
Resolution: Kirby- realizing that she only wants to be a hero and a guardian, gains the paint ability and paints directly on her face a set of eyes to match her true intent. He also paints her a cape fabric (to tie her arms to) and gloves to slide over her hands. She is overjoyed and names herself "Sketchcrow", promising to do her very best to be the hero that Kirby believes she can be.
[Insert star fade here.]
Trivia:
- Changing "Scarecrow" to "Scareclone" in Japanese requires only adding one letter to the end of scarecrow. It can also be read as "Scarecrone". Likewise, "Sketchcrow" is "Scarecrow" with 2 letter swapped out.
- Sketchcrow's original name was going to be a mix of "Kakashi" (scarecrow) and "gashi" (artist) but I didn't want people asking why she's named after a Naruto character. Besides the kanji would mix weird to make her name sound completely different (to instead mean "scarecrow child" which isn't too far off the mark but explaining to pun is convoluted when you have to explain why kanji is weird like that.
- Sketchcrow is loosely inspired by Amon, Kirby games enemies with detached hands (Magolor, for example), and "Thebestmaster" from Cucumber Quest. And perhaps also inspired by my love of the Super Mario RPG party member scarecrow sprites.
- The original design concept spawned from me wanting to have an enemy to introduce leaf Kirby, with Sketchcrow being made up of hay/flowers or something. The design quickly shifted to a scarecrow however.
- An "effigy" is something modeled after someone, like a statue or figurine. In Japanese "scarecrow" can also refer to an "effigy" based on which kanji is being used. Sketchcrow's names are all written in katakana however.

I think I mentioned that I was taking a server hiatus- I was a bit dejected after getting abandoned mid drawing stream so I decided to focus my efforts on improvement. Lots of character scraps and anatomy practice and such. I've been pretty busy too- I drew this picture here for a contest (and won 3rd place with it!), helped a lady at work with drawing her a logo, and saw a really amazing show at my local theatre that was so good I've been writing out a thank you note and making a thank you picture for the actors/cast/crew involved in the production. And I'm still getting used to my work schedule (the transit to this job is longer than my old one), though I recently got a raise so at least that's cause for celebration! Not to mention that I actually really like my job.
Once I finish my thank you picture I want to finish the half-finished DutyBound page that has been in the works for months. And I've got a scrappy version of a mini-comic about Alec teaching Wess about the okay hand meme that I want to finish because I thought it was pretty funny.
So yeah I guess it really has been forever since I've really checked Discord. I think I was going through checking it on a whim on my lunch at work the other day and accepted some friend requests pending but I forgot to respond to some tags/messages.

I have been improving as well and my art style is transitioning to a half realistic look. I wish you best of luck in the future friend

Ah a scarecrow monster, I love it! I like that she gives off kinda a creepy vibe (it's the mouth, probably), but she's also pretty cute when she's not... murderous.
Seriously, I love now in-depth you went with the multiple ref sheets and how organized it all is (I could never be this neat lol). Her design is simple enough but I can tell you put a lot of care into the finer details, explaining how she actually works and all. I never expected her stake to turn into a paintbrush but that's such a neat idea; don't think I'll look at a scarecrow the same way again haha. The effigies look really cool too, love their little hats and bowties. And the cape is a simple addition but I think it really works to convey that she's a hero now, so good thinking!
I like that there's a sense of mystery from her and that you forewent the whole 'Dedede orders a monster' episode structure; it's a nice deviation from the norm. And I love the idea of Kirby saving the day by simply painting on her face. That's so good, haha. I kinda like that it ends on a happy note for her, it's sweet. :>
Great job and thanks for your entry! Good luck!

Awwww thank you very much- I'm glad you like her! When I was originally designing her she was just going to be a demon beast but then I drew her with some happy eyes and got too attached to just kill her off as a monster.

Aww, well, it's a super-cute plot, she's definitely too precious to get destroyed! ^_^
