Description
Why can't Irish Elk still exist? D:Been going through a bit of an "art crisis", where every glance into my gallery and portfolio has me reeling and gagging a bit. So to remedy that, MOAR ART!
My second piece with a dip pen, India ink is my friend. <3 And the original is 11"x14"
I really want to get this design printed on a plain canvas tote bag for myself, but wherrrrre is a good place? Vistaprint has okay prices, any suggestions? Or any interest in a bag for yourself? I always need something to lug my books around at school (and my Dropkick Murphys bag has seen better days...), so why not go with something cool. Plus, get to show off my art. c:
That and it would be a sweet tattoo design
Mm and the two elk aren't meant to be to scale, kinda hemmed and hawed about which skull to use.
Enjoy!

How incredible would it be to be walking through the forests of Eurasia and coming across these beasts? I'd even settle for some of the other extinct megafauna, like Megatherium.
But thank you so much for the lovely comment <3
Crosshatching is such a fun style. I did do a little tutorial awhile back on the usage of pen:
While I do love the tight, refined effect for realism, it just isn't quite as fun as going wild with bold crosshatching. Fur is pretty basic to do, but I really love painting other surfaces, like the antlers on this piece. Then you can really go wild with the contouring.

I know, megafauna were so beautiful. The smilodon and irish elk are my faves: so commanding, so ancient! However, I couldn't imagine living in a world with giant animals, haha!
Aaaah super tutorial, thanks so much! Some time in the future I'll have to try out some more professional inks, then experiment with the hatching and shading styles. I really love the loose look, it's so natural... and yet, at the same time, it takes a lot of practice. You pull if off excellently.

I'd like to purchase a print, BUT I really like the Background texture and ivory appearance on this version over the flat white background your etsy image appears to have.Β Which image is closest?Β Thanks!

The original piece is simply black and white. The paper texture overlay that I used for the deviation here is meant for non-commercial use only (so I can't sell prints), but if you'd like, I can use a non=restricted texture and make a print with that. It won't look 100% the same, but I can get it pretty close. And then I can just set up a custom listing on Etsy for you.

Oh I was just checking out your shop! I'm going to keep an eye out for those lovely skulls that you sell. C:
Allllrighty so here is reserved listing for the print. I'm assuming that you wanted the 8"x10" print since that is all I had listed for the plain black and white one, but I can do 11"x14" as well.

And actually I had my listing for the original half-written before I went for lunch, just completed it. Here is the link to the original, there are a couple more views there as well.
