Description this is for 's contest [link]

so i already had a few pokemon i wanted to submit, i also went though an old monster book i used to be afraid to read before bed... and almost settled on submitting minotaurs for my mythical/legendary entry... but then i remembered my studies in my "Arts of the Pacific Isles Class" and it all fell into place, as i wanted to pick something more obscure!

KIKIWA-grass-RUN AWAY-

so i physically based it off of a kiwi, because i HAD to base it off of an animal, since the design of the masks already look like pokemon... kinda... so the kiwi turned out amazingly! also his feet are hands ;D

"They appear once a year in small swarms, that have been steadily shrinking. Their movements in the jungles are clearly distinguishable due to their bouncy excited skipping."

TUMBAWARI-grass/dark-REPEL- discourages wild encounters with pokemon (i know there are other abilities that do this)

based on a cassowary [link] [link] (lawlz) a large bird like an emu that was respected and revered for their supposed affect on head hunting (which as i learned isn't simply barbaric but served a purpose to their society)... but um... yea, then it's further based on the appearance of the masks

"They appear once a year and unlike their offspring, can and will avoid contact with most other pokemon. When cornered it attacks with it's quick fists or paralyzing aura."

Duk Duk masks are amazing masks worn by the Duk Duk society in Papua New Guinea [link] [link] and the masks were actually representative of an actual spirit, and during their ceremony they would appear from the forest and would parade around the villages... women and children were prohibited to look at them, supposedly they could die from it! male Duk Duk spirits die after the season is finished, and the female Tubuan spirits who gave birth to them disapear until the next season when they give birth to more male spirits...

i looked back on my notes and stuff, and admite it's been a long time since studied the culture, so it's likely i'm wrong on a lot of this, but i still liked the idea and am happy with the results!

are these hand drawn and colored or digitaly by using photoshop and stuff? either way they look good

lydario In reply to Trakyan [2011-11-28 06:15:30 +0000 UTC]

All hand drawn/colored. Most are enhanced as far as their colors, but all I do is a basic color restoration on photoshop so that they actually look like the drawings.

Awesome...
this could be a real Pokemon! ..since, as you know, almost all Pokemon are based from myths, legends, and cultural references.

Wait, you said in the culture that male duk duk spirts die after one season but Tubuan spirits stay alive. Does that mean (let's just ay this pokemon was in a game.) that this would be a female only species.

lydario In reply to Yonkonkaroo [2011-06-28 15:15:19 +0000 UTC]

I went back and realized I was a little unclear. I believe, as I recall, the female spirit(s?) were immortal, and would give birth to male spirits each year, the males die, and she returns to do the same the following year.

Woah! I love the cultural significance. When I first saw them, I thought they were based off the my of the Ostrich and how man got fire. >> Guess I was wrong, but this myth is much, much cooler, in my opinion.

Love the design, too! Specially the masks. XD I just love it all.

Nice. It's good that you've included a little known tradition from a little known culture, it really adds to the enigmatic-ness of the design.

That's exactly what I wanted to do. I love hearing about new stuff like that, so I figured Where's the fun in sharing something that everyone already knows?

Galahawk [2009-08-14 00:39:10 +0000 UTC]

Lovely, I'd love to have one of these in-game. The only disappointment for me was that upon evolution, it loses all its cool markings on its body.

... Also, it kinda reminds me of Kevin from the movie "Up." xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lydario In reply to Galahawk [2009-09-02 19:50:42 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yea right?

Well the markings I felt were best on the head/neck on this one, It's go enough details anyway, at least I thought. Plus now there's sort of a pattern to the leaves, and I didn't want designs over them to interfere with them. :}

What an awesome job u did on these I love the hand/feet thing, it makes me think that there's some creepy little tribal man hiding under all that plumage. The evolution is epic. I like Cassowarys Your colouring is flawless as always :] great job.

Personally, I think the big one would be better for submission. I just think it looks more like a big flightless bird, that's all

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lydario In reply to FawkesTheSkarmory [2009-08-14 02:46:53 +0000 UTC]

that... was pretty much the plan

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FawkesTheSkarmory In reply to lydario [2009-08-14 02:49:32 +0000 UTC]

I suppose so. And honestly I never noticed the arms being used as legs until I read the description. Though the big one could do with a ring/bracelet with a huge-ass spike, or some huge claw, because cassowaries have claws on their feet that they use for defense. They're still called the world's most dangerous bird even though they can't really disembowel you with a single kick, that's just a myth :/

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lydario In reply to FawkesTheSkarmory [2009-08-14 03:59:09 +0000 UTC]

perhaps you should read the descriptions before you make suggestions...

i didn't want to add a spike... i know they have one, it's a fairly known fact, but it "isn't" a cassowary, it's design is influenced by one, but again it's not one... the hands were meant to make the feet it's primary method of defense like a cassowary, and that it why i made them hands... an octopus has no bones and is able to slip into cracks... but octillery supposedly has a head that's supposedly as hard as a rock which would prevent this... something for which an octopus is famous for... the pokemon/animal kingdom are not linear, and this pokemon in particularly was based more on the the masks which are the "mythological" component which was the point of this entry of the contest... the cassowary was a secondary influence

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FawkesTheSkarmory In reply to lydario [2009-08-14 04:01:29 +0000 UTC]

Ah, well I was a bit confused
But then again it WAS just a suggestion after all. Your approach with hands for legs works too, I guess
