Thanks I've seen the name mental ray, but I don't know what it is.
Hair is the nightmare. Some hairs look good in some situations and at some certain scale. Most of the time they look pretty bad.

It's a renderer that comes with 3Ds max and Maya. I know what you mean, I've had the pleasure of dealing with Poser hair myself, and seen complaints from people who, like yourself, are quite experienced in the portrait field.

Depth of field isn't turned on, the render time would become absurd. (tens of hours by the look of it)

Thanks I generally discuss technical details only with personal friends in private.

Nothing special about the settings in this one. Render settings by themselves don't matter much if the rest is not in order. Poorly lit quality resources will still look like crap even if one uses maximum render settings.
The "magic" comes from how the light is set up and use of nodes in the material room.
