Description
Haven't had time for new renders, so I did a quick re-render of an old Firefly one with Octane.Just before Christmas I got an offer from SmithMicro to buy Poser 11 Pro upgrade for 70 dollars. I tried to buy it. It accepted my license as viable for an upgrade, but at the checkout it wouldn't let me buy it

Lovely!
I have Poser 11, and I can tell you two things about Superfly: (1) it's extremely slow, and (2) it's hard (impossible for me) to get the colors right. I've given up on it and gone back to Firefly.

Thank you
Ah, okay. I would still be curious to try it out if I can get a Poser upgrade at a reasonable price.
What do you mean by slow? For some it can be renders that take over 20 minutes, while some think 5-10 hours is quite normal for a final render.

You're welcome!
Most of my renders take a few minutes (though some may take a lot longer) - usually over an hour in Superfly.
BTW, hair props can be big time-wasters in Poser, but the worst is "atmosphere" and smoke/steam props. I usually do smoke or steam in postwork, which takes only a few minutes instead of days.

Sounds pretty much like Octane renders then. They usually take something between 20 minutes and 2 hours to reach a nice enough quality level. (GTX 780 with 6GB VRAM)
Yeah, same is true for Vue. Play enough with atmospherics in Vue and render estimates for a single frame jumps to hundreds of hours with a machine like mine.
It's frustrating when the hardware performance in general is such a bottleneck when working with 3D scenes. It slows down the pace of my workflow to an insane degree.

It's been suggested to me that I make a game with my OCs. One trouble with that is that I don't want to do violence or serious threats to my characters, but a bigger one is technical: game graphics have to be real time so I would have to redesign all of my OCs from scratch to work in a game engine, and the quality would suffer badly.

I have never looked into how they make characters for game engines or what the requirements/limitations are.
Mostly just interested in making stills for recreation as it is. I have tried a bit of animation now and then, but it felt like I just don't have enough computing power for that to be fun.
One of these would be nice The configuration I would like is just a bit over 30 000 dollars (+24% VAT). Now I am a little envious of people who can spend that much on a hobby

I used to be able to make long Flash animations, but something changed in Flash so I can't import AVI videos. So I have to do it with still images and edit each one, which forces me to limit animations to less than 60 frames or so.

Something weird has happened to my AVI files containing Poser animation. Windows 10 displays them wrong. Some it squashes into half height and bottom half is green, while others are displayed much larger than they should be.
Sigh, seems none of my video players are able to play them right anymore

I wonder if that's a hardware issue. I use a Toshiba laptop with Win10, and I don't have that problem. Or could it be the video player? (I use VLC.)

All other AVI's play just fine. It's just the ones I made that aren't working properly anymore. I used some free software to add audio to my animations. Worked fine back then.
I have an animation in my stash. I'll send a link in a note.

She is perhaps a bit too young for an old guy like me Thank you
Yeah, in my experience their way of selling things has always been cumbersome for the customer.
What is harming Poser is lack of Genesis 3 support. I don't know who is responsible for that situation. Programmers? SmithMicro? DAZ3D? Something else?

I've been told - I don't know how far to trust this - that compatibility is technically not hard, but Smith Micro doesn't feel like doing it. I've also been told, by the same source, that S.M. is in financial trouble - Poser is their only money maker and is gradually losing out to DAZ - and that they can be expected to go under soon, followed closely by compatibility.

Lynxander In reply to Chronophontes [2017-01-02 21:07:17 +0000 UTC]
I would agree with that, don't think the technical bit is the problem, it's lacking will somewhere.
Ah, I have never really checked what Smith Micro does as a whole. I do get a lot of e-mails from them offering all kinds of software. I thought Poser was just some small side business for them.
