Did this in art class. I'm really proud of it. ^^Didn't turn out exactly as I had hoped, because I didn't quite manage to get it to look like there was one direct light source, but otherwise I think the shading turned out okay.
The reference was a bronze statue of a Basilisk in a Harry Potter magazine.
I used photoshop to clean up the pencil sludge around the actual drawing. Because I could never actually make it that neat. xD

So I'm doing harry potter theme tattoos on my chest and i saw this amazing picture when i was looking at basilisk pictures for my tattoo and I was wondering if you would permit me to use this picture in my tattoo. It will be tweaked a bit but not very much. It truly s a beautiful drawing and i would love to use it. It will be a month or two before the tattoo is ready for the basilisk so I hope to hear a reply

This is a very cool drawing! Nice work on all the scales and detail and on the shading.
And you're not the only one who ends up with smudges; my pencil drawings are -always- covered with them too. XD

Oh no, I know the feeling very well. And for me it gets on my hand first (the side of my little finger mostly, since that's always on the paper) and then while drawing it just covers up my paper. And since it's on my hands it probably gets on my face too most of the time. D:

Oh, I know, the side of the pinky. That drives me crazy. All my friends think I'm a spaz because I wash my hands after nearly every class to get all the pencil lead off. xD

well... you wanted 'Advanced Critique', I'm giving you all I can. But keep in minde, that this is only my personal opinion, so don't give it too much credit ^^
First of all, i love detailed pencil work, I really do, and I don't know how many hours you must have spend doing this pic, but it's beautiful. (I certainly dont have this sort of patience...)
The eye is awsome, it cool that you can even see the wrinkles... and jesus... i dont want to put my arm into his mouth... *outch*
So, now the negativ ^^. I think you should make your shadings much harder. I mean the detail shading is great, each thing is as an individual perfect shaded, but the whole basilik seams somehow a bit flat. Try to make some parts really dark, and the it is also more clear from where the light comes.
hm... I think this is all I have to say ^^...

Hm, that's a good point. I did go over it a few times to make it darker while I was working on it, but I guess I sort of lost my perspective after all those hours of shading scales. 
Mostly, I just have to get over my squeamishness about hard pencil coloring because I'm afraid it'll ruin the picture if I screw up.
But I don't know what happened to the light source, I really don't. I tried to get a defined light source, but the thing about scales is you have to shade them where the other scales cover them up, AND where the light source isn't hitting them, and I just couldn't get the hang of it.
Hopefully that'll come with practice.

Actually, I don't do too much stuff like that... I had one other thing, though, just a close up of an eye, that's pretty similar. That'll be up soon. And a colored dragon profile that I'm working on, which may or may not be in any way similar to this one outside of my own brain (xD). The only other thing that I can think of that I have is another drawing from art class, but it's only similar in the sense that it was a shading exercise. Hm.
Anyway, I'll be uploading all those soon, and I'll probably do more of the basilisk's sort in the future, because it was a lot of fun.
