In Ruben's eyes, he's there to serve and protect others - not himself. He wishes that someone had been around to protect him - especially when he was younger - and he's secretly keen to try and be that 'protector'. Ruben would have absolutely had a strategy and he understands the concept of risk. He's also incredibly fortunate to have an excellent memory, so he would have been able to navigate through that maze aMAZingly well and super quick.

The group of demons are the first out - he knows the faster he gets them, the risk of them being injured reduces too. And even if a few of them are hurt - the other demons can help out. So next it's the human. One person. Even if they're injured, he can manage that. He'd use the time he has left to go back in after his partner. He knows he's pretty much dead. But he'd rather go back and face that death on his feet and at his partner's side. There's always a chance, no matter how small, of turning things around. People will say that he's doooooomed, but he'd argue:

"Well how do youuuuu know that? You gotta frikkin crystal ball? No. I didn't think so. And this is just a dumb hypothetical scenario anyway so hypothetically, I could also survive. So shut up. Oh. Sorryyyyy - I mean, 'shut up, Sirrrr'. Pfff!"
