Description
...Lame title...Photoshop 5.5 mostly done with dodge and burn tools and my trusty tablet.
Used an avs preset [link] - I have no idea which one - for the original pattern. Then just smudged, and dodged + burned and sharpened and blurred and airbrushed the image. I defected towards the end and used photos mostly thanks to [link] cheers guy! It was my intention to not use any special brushes, textures or photos but i had to finish it quick for one of my art majors. Maybe someday i'll finish it the way it was meant to be, so long as my hard disk doesn't blow up as has been the trend in recent times... *sigh*
-enjoy-
[edit] Cheers for all the positive comments and fav's.
This is one of those kind of very specific uber-detailed hit or miss images. It either works or it doesn't. I can't myself find any obvious critiques.. apart from wanting to remove and change a lot of 'elements' there is no "right" / "wrong" way to fix this. The composition is fixed and the ideas are totally random.. but a mech/organic "growth" was the goal and I think it worked.
..also yes there are a few 'real' things to be spotted here as I used all sorts of inspiration and resources, motorbike motor may well have been part of it. The idea of such images is to hint at familiar organic / mechanical forms without ever being an explicitly recogniseable form - although some parts are just like.. eyeballs or lungs or brains.
Also sorry guys for only having a shitty jpeg compressed version. I lost the original unfortunately.
...Look under the plate under the right eye for a secret message of DOOM!
there is no escape.

This was done 6 years ago during my final year of school. I don't go to any indoctrination institutions at the moment.

Cheers. I rather not stay confined to sanitised "sane" expressions. So "crazy" is what I'm after.
This was pretty much a visual experiment at depth and detail the whole process was almost pixel art with the zoom i was using and the brush sizes. I guess it's the digital counterpart of my working style anyway where people suggest I've got eye problems for getting so up close to my work.
I love this style of work though, it's like sculpting out of basic forms to discover what's hidden beneath the surface. I didn't create it, I just peeled back its' layers.

I've never seen anything quite like this. I'm a big fan of organic and mechanical "stuff"! This is so over-the-top excellent in so many ways. Imagine an entire living room wall done like this? Or the side of a van? Or better yet a touring bus? Go for it!

Cheers bro! It actually does! I got a large scale print of this done and traded that with another artist for their work. They hung it up at this chill party / art exhibit space, with some funky lighting on it. Worked very well

Not so much patience as a relaxing zoning out into the details. This was not a hassle to make at all, just fun.
H R Giger was a visionary master, anyone into visionary arts can't help but be influenced by that crazy cat! Alex Grey was also a big inspiration as I was listening to tool - lateralus going through the front cover designed by Alex Grey.
As far as pointers and tips, a tablet gives unbelievable control, I couldn't do anything on this image without it (I lie, the center with the eyes I started before I got a tablet).
The building blocks of the image was a screenshot of a geometric shape in winamp's AVS visualisations ran through a couple filters in photoshop and then a gradual build up of forms with light airbrushing and heavy dodge and burning.
Then I think some good music is necessary, I still remember I was listening to Pink Floyd's comfortably numb when I just started seeing shapes of a disjointed face and eyes and it started from there.
Used a bit of airbrushing to create defined forms or change the base colour but usually I'd use the dodge and burn to 'push' the details out of the shapes already there, switching through the different modes for different effects. Mostly working in midtones and then in shadows as I worked on parts that had that infected tissue look and highlights as I went for that metallic shine or glowing effects.
...hope that helped. The best advice I can give is get a tablet and play around, it's really fun!
