Description
I've mentioned the Creature of the Week activity a few times before. Well, they recently held the 100th round. The topic was 100 creature thumbnails in one month. It was an amazing, fun, difficult challenge. I'm very happy with the results, except that I should have included more invertebrates in the designs.Related content

How do you draw so amazing? I have always wanted to draw and I am horrible at it. I would love to draw creatures, especially as amazing as yours. Is there a way I can learn to draw well or is it complete natural skill? I am getting a drawing tablet soon and hope to try with that.

Thank you!
Of course you can learn to draw. Just like any skill, certain people take to it more easily, but also like any skill, it can be learned. How old are you? If you're old enough, I'd recommend taking a class at a local community college, if that's an option. Take a class with a teacher that will show you how to accurately measure and observe what you see, not one that just teaches you how to "express yourself." Learn how to draw what you see. I'd stick with pencils and/or charcoal before playing on a digital tablet, though. Traditional media make better teachers than digital media.
As for learning how to draw creatures, I have several tips. First, learn as much as you can about animals. Learn about biology, evolution, and the fossil record. Learn how animals are classified, and the amazing diversity of the animal kingdom. Get some books and study animal skeletal and muscular anatomy. Get a good sense of gesture and shape.

Man, those guys are FREAKY. Look like something from "Alien Planet", "The Future is Wild" or movies directed by Guillermo del Toro.

Thanks, man. Wayne Barlowe wrote "Expedition," the book on which Alien Planet is based, and often works as a concept artist for del Toro. He's my biggest artistic influence, so it's no surprise that you'd get that vibe from this image.

Hey, IRIRIV. This was done for the Creature of the Week activity over on ConceptArt.org. As the name implies, every week a new topic is posted, and those participating must create a creature design that fits that topic.
The 100th round of Creature of the Week was an important milestone, so instead of working on one creature design for a week, the topic was to create 100 thumbnails of creatures over the space of a month.
The piece you linked to was also done for this activity. Here's some links to see the rest:
The thread where all the final images were posted for voting (huuuge download!): [link]
Some incomplete entries: [link]
The thread for CoW round 101, where people chose a specific creature design from CoW 100 and refined it (including some of my own designs!): [link]
And the voting thread for round 101: [link]
As for participating, this took place right at a year ago. That's no reason that you can't do it yourself right now, though!

No, there are still weekly rounds of CoW. Except for right now, which is a three week special round. But regular weekly topics will resume pretty soon.

The level of creativity here is beyond awesome. I really like how some creatures have obvious terran ancestries, the giant baboon, the psycho anteater, etc.
Do you know Terryl Whitlatch? Your work looks set to kick her ass any day.

M0AI In reply to nemo-ramjet [2007-12-24 02:08:28 +0000 UTC]
Hey, thanks nemo! Terryl Whitlatch is actually my biggest influence when it comes to creature design (taking the place of Wayne Barlowe, who was my biggest influence in my younger years). I'm trying to make my creature designs and style more different from hers, though, since I've been told many times that my creatures are reminiscent of hers. I'm also trying to include more invertebrates, and generally get away from designing creatures that obviously fit into existing orders of Earth fauna.
