When I, in my wandering around the external world, happen upon a moment that captures my full presence, there is an ineffability to that moment that cannot be ever expressed fully except in the experience of it. And despite knowing that, my reaction as a creative, is to attempt to capture exactly that which can never be captured.
This process feels almost ritualistic; a gratitude for, a supplication to, and a celebration of that experience. These moments are open to us at all times if one looks closely and quietly and often enough.

This painting is a plein air from memory. An oxymoron? I have started to really take to the idea of these. I don't sit in front of a scene and immediately try to scribble something down to capture it, thereby distancing myself from it. I instead soak it all in and experience it as deeply as I can. I try and let the hues, the lighting, the environment's mood, my mood and the whole blinking ineffebility of it all sink in and become a part of me.

Then I go back to the cave and paint it with the memory of it guiding my hand.

I have been starting to question the value of even doing these kind of paintings digitally. A sequence of 1s and 0s duplicable and reproducible on any screen in any quantity with a click. This seems to be at odds with the nature of the experience itself, which were single unique moments of grace never to be reproduced and experienced in quite that way ever again.
A print of a digital painting like this goes for not much more than it costs to get a nice meal in a nice restaurant. How about a real painting?
I don't know the answer but it is something I find myself wondering about that more and more the more I seem to be following a path away from working in any form for the various outlets of creative industry that is so entwined with this notion of mass product creation.

Thank you! This one was actually a bit of a conglomerate of scenes stitched together

I am very lucky! This spot is a 3 minute drive away (I embellished it a tiny bit). But beauty is to be found in the dirtiest dingiest alley too with the right eyes!
