Description
this was fun, not doing insects for once....picture revised and updatedThanks heaps for the kind feedback, wow, being compared to JGurney? That's enormously flattering, - (note to everyone who's not seen the Dinotopia books, CHECK 'EM OUT!, and be sure to de-fluff your eyeballs after they've rolled around the floor)

Wow.Thank you for replying..yeah,guess I should check out his FB-as well as GurneyJourney, now that I finally have a www connection.
Hey,by the way,I loved Salsa. I'm not entirely sure if I got the story, so that's just another reason for me to read it from time to time-apart from the incredible paintings. Actually you're somewhere in the same 'realm' as JG for me with that piece.
Reminds me of showing it to a friend of mine,n8schattengewaechs , he and his brother are old friends of mine and just recently, they started to breed mantids again.
n8schattengewaechs was also the one who borrowed me his Intuos Pro just to tell me a few weeks later that if he'd ever need it, he'd buy a new one and this one (in front of me as writing this) was now mine.
Check his page if you're curious, I think there should be some interesting/useful photos of the animals for ya.
Thanks again for the reply!

So there is a certain plot, a certain meaning we can't see at first glimpse?
Cause I love such things like crazy. Would be even cooler if helped understanding to know this or that about insects. Not that I was very educated in that, but as mentioned I got my experts..
Btw., dunno if I mentioned it, but by your field of expertise and as well the fountain of different creatures you unleash, combinded with the rather simple or at least not so mathematically strict forms and shapes they can take again combined with all the colours and patterns and all those possibilities-chooch that was a long sentence-so,by all those factors, your work's extremely inspiring and fueling that certain "what am I doing, I want to-I need to PAINT!"-feeling.
So, uh, it's..really really great.
Can't wait finding the time to use my brandnew intarrwebs and scan what's new.

Love the helmet design! Also beautiful pastel shades on the wings and feathers! Lovely details on there! I also really like how you made the background buildings streak down in that movement of a brush stroke too! <3 Rather beautiful!Β

m0zch0ps In reply to Eden-West [2014-04-16 06:44:22 +0000 UTC]
Thanks E-West, it's always a challenge to suggest background details without getting bogged down in actually painting them, so mono-directional brush strokes definitely help.

I can see its keeping a very beautiful direction of gravity on the buildings, as if they are heavy. Nice work!

How you paint the shadows so accurately? How you determine how the shape of the shadow will be?
π: 0 β©: 1
m0zch0ps In reply to Goodnight-Melbourne [2013-09-28 19:52:43 +0000 UTC]
reference helps a lot, just to gauge the right shadow/sun strength combos, - firstly I use an extra layer, so I can paint and erase where it suits best, and just using a keen eye to figure out where the light is likely to fall and what shapes it would cast, drawing mental lines and guesstimating where the shadows are,
as long as you're applying a feel to add to the overall emotion and atmosphere, thats still paramount
also the shadows have to be soft at the edges, and use bounce/ambient light
