Description
this was fun, not doing insects for once....picture revised and updatedThanks heaps for the kind feedback, wow, being compared to JGurney? That's enormously flattering, - (note to everyone who's not seen the Dinotopia books, CHECK 'EM OUT!, and be sure to de-fluff your eyeballs after they've rolled around the floor)

But references are not easy when the subject is entirely fictional..like this one -- a griffon.Β
Did it take you long time to master it? The lights and shadows?

just collect images from similar animals, eg lion, tiger, eagle (for the wings), get ones with the same lighting, you can easily fill in the info gaps. Light and shadow mastering is a long process, never truly mastered except for the real masters!

I was thinking more of an ibis-griffon hybrid, but you're onto something with the Egyptian ibis influence.

I know D&D has a variety of sphinxes, all with the same body type but different headsΒ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sphinx_(β¦
Paizo publishing has expanded a great deal upon the culture of these beings and how the different types relate to each other

I'll never be able to de-fluff my eyeballs after looking through a Dinotopia book... Never.
But now that you mention it, this does kinda remind me of it.

Thanks Rimskye,- just to answer, if I may, - James Gurney is an outstanding (and visionary) painter, most famous for his Dinotopia book aeries, here's his wiki [link]
I hope I've led you to some great bedtime reading

HAHAHA!Seeing the thumbnail,I just opened this pic for telling you how much this reminds me of olΒ΄Gurney and what a big compliment this actually was in case you wouldnΒ΄t have known him.
But a good thing you do so you can appreciate being at eye level with THE MASTER(2)(actually more than eye level but the poor old man only got oil paint, whaddayaknow).
After JamesG,being my biggest idol (alongside MASTER(1),of course) Deviantart is really mixinΒ΄it up more and more with every day.
I switch THAT far between "OHMYGODICANNEVERACHIEVETHISSKILLLEVEL" and "Hey!So THATΒ΄s the way those pros do it,and itΒ΄s totally easy, letΒ΄s paint!" that IΒ΄m hardly ever painting, and after 4h of deviantartΒ΄s rollercoaster of motivation IΒ΄m eventually so exhausted IΒ΄m gonna have to play MWO for a while.Until I go to sleep for example.

Well,in case of General McQuarrie,I guess thatΒ΄s imminent to every concept designer.
I canΒ΄t imagine he and his work wouldnΒ΄t be an important subject somewhere while artschool..

so beautiful (=^O oo O^ you do an wonderful job i wish i could draw like you when i'll be big ^^ i'll practice a lot....but i wonder why people comment so much on a chibi picture (for example) without shading and not that interesting and won't comment that much on true art pieces like this on Q^Q it's sad........
