Description
The kanji for the code of the samurai arranged in a cross pattern. From up-down: justice, courage (or bravery), benevolence [in the middle], respect (or politeness), honesty (or veracity). I will be getting this as a tattoo. I looked up honor and loyalty kanji. It's only showing one character for each. Why does this one have two for each? Not sure if there is other ways for each word. Thanks!!

I'd like to know where you're getting this from. These translations are straight from a Japanese instructor I had a few years ago in college and I've looked them up, as well.

Just curious, but isn't the Kanji for "Justice" repeated next to "Loyalty"? If you did that for balance (two characters on each side), I understand completely. Just making sure I'm not ignorant.

Yeah. Justice is "gi", while loyalty is "chuugi", so the first symbol says "chuu" while the second says "gi".

Ok, thanks. I have them running down my spine and I was counting them in your cross. I'm sure it would have been humorous to watch. End result: Spine-8 characters, Cross-9 characters. Needless to say, that caused me some confusion. Calls in my friend (second generation Japanese) and asks her about it. She said that she didn't write it down when she was giving me the design because having "gi" and "chuugi" is considered redundant. "Chuugi" is more often used by itself because it shows more of an individual's character.

I didn't use a translator I just typed in "samurai code in japanese, kanji" in a search engine and that website came up.
