Why Aren’t you Running Away?

It was raining too hard. Todd just left in a stressing day from school, his house is too far away, and his bus accidentally left him. All he had in the rain was his hoodie which seemed to be useless since it was very thin, his backpack filled with heavyweight books that most wasn’t used for the day, and his lunchbox all empty. He thought that he had enough.
He walked in the side of the road, trying to cross it and maybe find one of his friends’ house since it was already too blurry and dangerous to go any further in the rain, which probably can turn into a storm.
‘’Can this day get any worse?!’’
The a car ran past him, splashing his face with the mud on the floor, a true cliché in movies, happening in reality Which is usually a sign for bad luck.
‘’I guess it can.’’ Todd let out a groan.
After he crossed the road, Todd looked around with his other eye shut and trying to look for shelter. He was in luck. He recognized the row of houses and he knew that his friend Mike, lived in one of them. And it was close, too. Even though they were ‘’frenemies’’, they still were buddies and it’s not like neither of them doesn’t have a heart to spare them a place to stay.
He knocked (or banged…) on the door and Mike’s mother opened the door, greeting him.
‘’Oh my, Todd! W-What happened?’’ The mother said, rather looking worried with her small pupils and one hand covering her mouth.
When Todd was about to speak, the mother instantly knew what he wanted to request.
‘’Come, come! You must be freezing.’’ The mother said wrapping a blanket around him. Todd appreciated the mother’s kindness and whispered a thank you. He slowly wrapped the towel around his head and dried his hair.
‘’If you want to see Mike, he’s upstairs. Playing video games as usual.’’ The mother said, rolling her eyes. ‘’I’ll call both of you when dinner’s ready.’’
‘’Thanks again.’’ Then the mother let out a sweet smile. Todd went up to Mike’s room and opened the door uninvited. Mike was sure to be startled, for he was playing a horror game.
‘’W-What are you doing here?!’’ Mike asked.
‘’The rain is practically turning into a storm, so I decided to stop by so I could have a place to stay for the night. That okay?’’ Todd said.
‘’Of course, but next time don’t scare the crap out of me! Haven’t you heard of knocking?!’’
‘’No. Mind telling me about it?’’ Todd said with a sarcastic tone, smirking.
‘’You want me to kick you out?’’
‘’Jeez dude! Just a joke.’’ Todd slightly chuckled.
Mike was not impressed.
‘’So what are you playing anyway?’’
‘’Nothing. I was just about to save anyway.’’ Mike said. He closed the game and shut off his computer. Then he looked at the soaking wet boy.
‘’Sooooo getting over Marrianne yet?’’ Mike teased.
‘’What brought that up all of a sudden?’’ Todd said while looking away with a tint of pink on his cheeks.
‘’I don’t know, it’s just fun seeing you ‘’fanboying’’ whenever I mention her. It’s one of the many things I enjoy. Watching you embarrass yourself.’’
‘’You’re not really helping, you know that?’’
‘’Who says I was helping?
Dude, why don’t you just get over it? Marrianne is clearly putting you in the friendzone and I know you know that. Why don’t you just move on?’’
‘’Mike, you have no idea how many times I’ve tried. I attempted to but I just….can’t. There’s something about Marrianne I can’t get past my head. I mean, she has all the qualities of a girl I want. She’s pretty, smart, sweet, funny, and—‘’
‘’Blah blah blah!
Todd, you’re starting to sound cheesier than usual. It annoys me!’’ He yelled. Todd did seem like he was in another world just talking about Marrianne. He seemed happier all of a sudden, like a little girl in a candy shop.
‘’Reaaally immature, Mike. Wha-! Why am I even mentioning this to you?! You don’t even care!’’
‘’Because we’re buddiiiieeees~’’ Mike said, putting his hand on Todd’s shoulder. He swiftly shooed it away from his shoulder like it was some kind of fly and scoffed.
‘’Shut up.’’
‘’Boys! Dinner!’’ The mother announced from downstairs.
The two boys stood up and opened the door. But then Mike blocked Todd’s way and said with a smile:
‘’This isn’t over.’’
‘’Oh believe me. It is. Now move! I’m so hungry I could eat a horse.’’ Todd replied, swaying Mike’s arm away from him.
After they ate dinner, Todd was offered to take a bath and was lent some of Mike’s clothes for the night, which seemed to fit perfectly for they nearly have the same size. Todd slept in the guest room but somehow he couldn’t sleep.
Is it because of that short conversation about his crush for her? Was Mike right? Will it ever happen? Is it mutual? Or is it just a big fairy tale in his mind? It is a fact that Marrianne just wants to be friends, but was there still a chance that she secretly wants the same thing?
Todd shook his head and went to the right side of the bed while forcing one pillow to his face, his groans all muffled and thoughts all scrambled.
‘’This thinking is not good for me. I need to get some rest.’’
Next Day:
The storm died down, thankfully. Todd put back Mike’s clothes in the hamper and wore his old clothes from last night after taking a bath. He was offered some breakfast and then he packed all of his stuff.
‘’I’ll be going now!’’ He said in a friendly tone, opening the door and waving goodbye.
‘’Thank you very much for the stay! I really appreciated it!’’
‘’You are very welcome. Come and visit anytime!’’
‘’I will!’’
Then he saw Mike still smirking, giving him that ‘’I-Know-What-You’re-Thinking’’ look. Todd replied with a glare then rolled his eyes.
Todd had always walked past a forest because it was a shortcut to his house. It’s safer now, since it’s day.
When he was walking, he heard a whimpering sound. It sounded like…a puppy.
This call obviously means that it needs help, and Todd couldn’t let go of that. So he followed the cute whimper noise and finally found it on the edge of a tree. It wasn’t injured, but it seemed like it had lost its parents.
‘’What’s the matter boy? Are you lost?’’ Todd asked, trying to communicate.
The little puppy curled up, worried. Yes, he was lost. Todd picked the creature up and petted him gently.
‘’Did your owners abandon you? They must be rich, because you look nothing like…other dogs I have seen…’’
Todd observed him closely. He was right. He was completely different from all dogs, kind of like dogs in makeup in movies. The dog had fur like nothing before, and its teeth looked rather strange.
‘’It would be nice to keep you, you know? Mom always liked a puppy.’’
As the puppy heard this, he instantly jumped off and surrounded Todd jumping while wagging his tail.
‘’You really want me to keep you, huh? Well then!’’ Todd picked him up once again and scratched his neck while laughing happily.
‘’I’ll call you… hmm…Ah!
M—‘’
Before Todd could finish, the dog looked behind him and his happy expression suddenly disappeared.
‘’Hm? What’s wrong?’’ Todd asked. The puppy tried to struggle away from Todd with all of its might.
‘’Hey, hey, hey! What’s the matter with you?’’ Todd said, still not letting go. The dog tried to point it out, but he didn’t have to.
Todd suddenly heard violent barking noises getting nearer and nearer. He froze and finally let the dog go. When he slowly turned around, he saw a pack of large wolves growling.
It seemed like Todd has found the puppy’s parents. It had the same characteristics.
Todd was still frozen out of fear. His heart was beating by a mile, and his breath could not catch up. He caught the wolves off guard and ran as fast as he could. But as expected, the wolves came after him. Todd knew he could not outrun a bunch of predators, but he tried his best not to get caught. He still had so much to live for.
But then one wolf caught up to him and cornered him in his body, signaling for action. Todd tried to struggle and yell for help but it was no use. He struggled with all of his might, feeling the disgusting drool in his face. Then Todd saw a small twig that was sharp enough to poke its eye and enough for a distraction. He slowly grabbed the twig beside him and aimed for the eye.
Success! He quickly poked the eye of the wolf yet the wolf again caught up to him and left a nasty bite mark on his neck.
‘’GAHHHH!!!’’ Todd yelled out of pain. The wolf was also in ache, gave up running while covering its own eye.
But Todd couldn’t stop now. He kept running and running until he found a perfect hiding spot where the pack of wolves couldn’t chase him anymore. He did it, he survived. But the mark on his neck still left a noticeable scar.
‘’You gotta be kidding me.’’
He went home and no one was there. He remembered that his mom went to the grocery store. He instantly went to the bathroom and tried to get a good look of the scar. It was long. And it looked really bad. He tried to put some Betadine medicine, but for some reason, it just became worse and made him scream out of pain. Then he tried some alcohol.
Okay, that did not work at all.
So he just put on some bandage on the scar and it was slowly getting better for some reason.
‘’I-I’m sure it’ll be better in the morning…
…Right?’’
