Description An experiment to see how Mat would look as a sprite from a game on the ZX Spectrum*, Commodore 64 and Amstrad CPC 8-bit computers. Not sure how accurate these would be.

*(this one can also double graphically as an MSX version)
Mat (c) Mat Kelman (~Machu )

I just think it's neat!

But for MSX ports, leave that to Konami since they made the greatest games on the MSX, especially Parodius, Yie Ar Kung Fu, and Metal Gear!

I would pay good money for someone to make this.

Not sure if that asterisk is true. Native MSX1 games have very different graphics from the ZX-Spectrum.

- The MSX1 has 8x1 color cells, instead of the 8x8 colors cells of the speccy
- The MSX2 has modes with either 16 to 256 simultaneous colors, from 256x212 to 512x424 without color clash
- The MSX2+ has modes with up up to 19268 simultaneous colors, in 4:1:1 chroma subsampling

If you want to compare what all these 4 platforms are capable, maybe its best to visit the Retro Gallery:

MSX version of European games was usualy similar to the spectrup by not converting the game and use it as it was developped by the spectrum devlopper who simply does not work on a real MSX versionΒ

Why didn't you use any colors on the Speccy? D:
Shows off the lineart better, but would've been nice with some more color

I didn't know at the time the best way to show colours; they tend to clash on a Spectrum

Nice sprites, why don't you try SNES/Famicom style ?

Well I was only curious about these computers. Maybe someday

Heeh, the ZX Spectrum has a higher resolution while the Commodore 64 has a wider colour palette. X3
The MSX version would basically be the Spectrum version with colour. =3

I agree with Kim, I love seeing these 'fake' comparisons on how sprites would look on different computers/consoles.
Might be fun to experiment with this myself. (Last time I've done anything sprite related was way back on my BillyTheCat128 account. )

Keep up the great work Machu. ;3

I'm wondering if I got the resolution for Speccy right. I believe it did have a bigger screen and 1:1 pixels, whereas the C64 and Amstrad had 2:1 pixels? Now I'm sounding really nerdy, haha xD

I will say while the Spectrum had limited colours, it didn't stop there being great linart.
I'd love to make fake screenshots of a game, maybe make fake cassette inlays and put them on my shelf - I just need to know what the "game" would be!

Thankyou very much. It was a great experiment (I'm partial to the C64 version myself )

You're welcome. ;3
I think the C64 did use a lower resolution for some of its game yes, I think I've also seen games that had 1:1 visuals but those were very few and mostly reserved to small sprites, most of the time whenever graphics were involved they used the 2:1 pixel aspect.

Cassette inlays sounds like a great idea.
I love seeing people's takes on old gamebox art. ^^

Also, there were some pretty unique games on the C64 like 'weird dreams' --> [link]

Great stuff! The Spectrum sprite is probably the best out of the lot - at least for me anyway.

Even if the Speccy's palette is limited, it doesn't stop there being great lineart
