Wow, I didn't even realize I could offend people by cosplaying a fictional character (I realize that sentence sounds incredibly insensitive to racism for some people, but I'm not trying to step on toes here). I've always associated cosplaying with escaping and just enjoying a fandom; doing it to celebrate a favorite character and just having fun with it. God I realize how it could be offensive, but when I see comments from people ganging up on a cosplayer and telling them to eat a bag of dicks, and just downgrading them, when the cosplayer themselves did not blatantly mean any disrespect. It's all just so horribly depressive and discouraging to me. I'm really very glad I stumbled upon this, because I had no idea this was even an issue.

This is freaking rad, I love it, but you could've tried to at least get a closer eye colour to what scar has so it'd be easier to identify who you were cosplaying, since it isn't particularly obvious.

Dear machui826,
Do not listen to these raving lunatics because what you did here is awesome and super witty and artistic--- not "brown facing".
It does not demean any culture at all. It's beautiful.
As an Alaskan native (3/4ths on moms side) I take no offense to this.
It is a gorgeous use of makeup and props

Thank you dear >w<
I'm glad you like it !
Actually I don't know what "brown facing" means untill I search it up ( my English sucks )
The idea is just from the color scheme of Scar...which is tan fur...
Even the Musical ver. of Scar is in tan skin to represent the dark side of the Scar
I was kinda shock that the outlook came out as "brown facing" to few of the viewers...
And Sad I don't know how to respond to that /w\
But still I leart from that
thank you for your support and comment!!!
It is such a relief after seeing your comment. Thank you !

Also this isn't "brown facing" its "costume" get the fuck over it people. Its a fucking costume.

Scar isn't meant to be some pasty white person. He's a fucking brunette lion. If anyone should be portrayed in a pale skintone it'd be Simba or Mufasa. Scar is meant to be dark.

My lord, people are fucking retarded.

Also, I'm half-Japanese Half Mexican. When a Casuasian person dresses and an Anime characters like say..Naruto, or Major Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell, is it yellow facing? People that cosplay as another gender Crotch-facing? Your argument is so, so invalid. And no, I don't find costuming as another race offensive, unless there is an actual reason to be offended.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

buttghost In reply to SteampunkFanChris [2013-04-05 02:30:52 +0000 UTC]

being offended by another person treating skin color / race as a costume prop IS a legitimate reason to be offended hth. its fine that youre not offended but trying to tell others they arent allowed to be hurt by something that hurts them is not fine.

if those white people arent changing their skin or eyes in an attempt to look more "asian" than i'd say whatever its fine. i could be wrong though. i do know (as in i have seen the opinion around in discussions) that some people are annoyed by so many white people dressing as anime characters.

my argument is not invalid just because you hold a differing opinion lol

darklion In reply to buttghost [2013-04-03 22:01:56 +0000 UTC]

So, In Japan there was a disney world put in Tokyo. There was a biiig uproar about what they did because they said that at this disney world, Only white women could play Cinderella, Bell, Ariel, with the only Asian role of Mulan and cast being up for grabs. I take it from your stance said here, you agree with that then? Or perhaps you don't? So if you do, you are proving yourself a tool, and if you don't, you are proving yourself a hypacrit. BTW, the Mulan role was given to a Japanese person when she should have been chinese by Disney's standards of "Accuracy"

Hmmm, what's right here, well? In a majorly Asian country, Disney lost an opportunity to provide jobs and growth and opted for rigid racism because no other race may play the characters other than that race.

This is exactly what you are saying you agree with. The race card is a tired, old card. The only people who play it, are losers that get off on correcting other people. Little preppy holier than thou's that actually think they amount to something when they run their mouth like this.

I guess what I'm really saying is, there are 7 billion people on this planet, and among them are real villains, tyrants, bad policy makers, and a MULTITUDE of holy causes a person like you can take up and actually do some good, but doing this though, makes you a waste of space and a burdon on others. Returning to to the 7 billion people statement, Here's an idea! If the creative expression and joy of other people really does offend you so greatly, then do your duty to overpopulation, get a razor, write a sappy note, but put some quiet music that you can lament the state of the world and how no one sees you as the pillar of moral justice you think you are, get in the bath tub, and do try not to miss with the razor. What? I'm simply talking about shaving your klegs XDDD and leaving the rest of the good people of the world the fuck alone while you're at it XD

re: white people cosplaying anime characters, as long as theyre not changing their skin color or fucking with their eyes in an attempt to look more "asian" then i'd say theyre fine

disney parks are an official business that owns characters with established races and appearances. if theyre going for total accuracy, then yeah casting only white women for the characters that are white women is fine. but thats really not relevant at all to this

the "race card" only exists because racists are looking to ignore and discredit people who notice and call out their racism. complaining about "the race card" is a tool of cowards to shut down discussions of racism.

racists ARE real villains, tyrants, bad policy makers, because racism is real and terrible. and holding discussions about these racists and racism is a "holy cause" or whatever the hell youre trying to call it

ps jokes about suicide arent funny

SteampunkFanChris In reply to buttghost [2013-04-03 21:48:47 +0000 UTC]

Actually, the correct is "Blackface", and you are a complete douche and utter waste of oxygen. It's a costume, not a facial slur. Get over your over-inflated sense of self-righteousness. Tool.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

buttghost In reply to SteampunkFanChris [2013-04-05 02:33:15 +0000 UTC]

from discussions ive read, both blackface and brownface are acceptable terms, where blackface is more specifically tied to blackface in american history, and brownface is a broader term. i never said it was a racial slur either lmao. it is racist to use race as a costume prop.

youre the one attempting to shut down this discussion by just flinging insults at people lol

PowFlip In reply to buttghost [2013-04-10 18:23:43 +0000 UTC]

You don't seem to understand what the actual problem with blackface is.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

buttghost In reply to PowFlip [2013-04-11 23:49:06 +0000 UTC]

it reduces black people to degrading stereotypes for the fun and profit of others. if its anything other than that (which is obv a general simplification), then youre right and i dont know what the "actual problem" is.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

PowFlip In reply to buttghost [2013-04-12 20:03:59 +0000 UTC]

That's right, because blackface is insensitive racial caricature - but which propagated and perpetuated racial stereotypes, and created a false representation of black culture which eclipsed and replaced actual black culture in popular media for over a century. To the extent that even black actors would perform in blackface, because the caricature was more popular than the real thing.

To try and equate this image to blackface is to not acknowledge and respect the seriousness of the issues behind blackface and the devastation it wreaked on culture. It's about a whole lot more than stupid make up. And I think it's too serious of a subject to just get thrown around as a buzzword.

Marketable "black culture" is still being manufactured by the entertainment industry today, but it has damn near nothing in common with this image aside from being tasteless.

RadioActiveRedhead In reply to buttghost [2013-01-06 22:18:50 +0000 UTC]

So if that's the case then you cannot dress as a geisha for Halloween, or a native, or anything of that sort.
And as far as I'm concerned, brown facing is used to demean a race. This is anything but demeaning. I think that people are just trying to be upset over something they shouldn't.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

buttghost In reply to RadioActiveRedhead [2013-01-08 23:28:05 +0000 UTC]

that is the case, actually! dressing up as a geisha is appropriative and disrespectful to japanese culture/people and actual geisha, and dressing up as a native american or any first nations person is invariably racist and trivializing of hundreds of cultures. this-is-not-native.tumblr.com has a bunch of links about how "dressing up as a native" is harmful to native people as individuals and as a whole.

treating a race as a costume is demeaning. for the person in the "costume" its something they can do for fun and then wash off at the end of the day or at any moment before. for people who dont "wear race" as a costume, i.e. people of color, it is something they live with every moment, and that includes all the culturally-ingrained racism and pain and stigma they face just for existing.

its not something they can just take off later and set aside for a night. so for people to treat it as if it is is really disrespectful. regardless of their intent.

people have good reason to be upset. blackface/brownface have an entirely racist history attached to them, one that cant be removed from it.

RadioActiveRedhead In reply to buttghost [2013-01-09 02:40:04 +0000 UTC]

this is just a ridiculous concept. If that's the case we shouldn't do anything. and even more ridiculous still; I cannot believe people are making such a stupid fuss over a scar cosplay. it's so laughable

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

buttghost In reply to RadioActiveRedhead [2013-01-09 21:38:36 +0000 UTC]

respecting other people's existences is a ridiculous concept to you? taking initiative to understand how other people are hurting and to work to not hurt them in that way is a ridiculous concept to you?

refusing to dress up in ways that harm other people =/= refusing to do anything and everything. do you seriously think that everything you do needs to harm someone? ?? like that is such a serious jump in logic. just because this one thing is harmful does not mean everything other thing is harmful. i think you seriously need to consider what youre saying here.

lets try an analogy: youre playing a game of soccer with friends. at one point, when you go to kick the ball, a friend comes running up and also kicks the ball--but you miss and you end up kicking your friend and injuring their leg. do you demand that the game end right there? that you should all never play soccer again? that, in fact, they should never play any sports ever again? or do you apologize for injuring your friend, even though it was an accident, and try to avoid situations where you might injure them or anyone else in the future?

you can dress up as any character you wish, but dont utilize racist practices. dont dress up as racist or otherwise harmful caricatures of people or cultures. its not the scar cosplay thats the problem, its the way they went about it, i.e. darkening their skin to mimic a person of color. that is whats problematic.

whether you think it is silly or ridiculous or stupid that people are offended by this is honestly irrelevant to the fact that there are tons of people who are offended by this. people arent going to stop having emotions just because you want them to stop. your friend in the soccer analogy is not going to stop being injured because you think it is ridiculous that they are in pain.

RadioActiveRedhead In reply to buttghost [2013-01-11 04:49:53 +0000 UTC]

TLDR

In short, I think its ridiculous because its a fucking costume and it seems the most types of people getting asshurt over it is overachieving white people.

If ANYTHING I should be getting mad about it, considering I'm more closer to a minority than a majority of the people being upset about it.

Its ridiculous because its a costume and if anything it compliments. Its a beautiful piece of art and makeup. If it weren't for the neck color showing you wouldn't even know.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

NeriSiren In reply to RadioActiveRedhead [2013-03-25 03:22:26 +0000 UTC]

"TLDR" Yeah, I think that pretty much sums up your argument, RadiActiveRedhead. As in, "I don't care what you say, buttghost, I'm just going to continue to call your comment stupid (even though I didn't actually read your whole comment because TLDRโ€ฆyeah, that makes sense!)"

Now, I'm not sure if what the artist did is brownfacing or not. Maybe people wouldn't react this way if this was a drawing or painting instead of a photo? I personally see all three options as the same idea -- the artist is imagining what Scar would look like as a human, using all of Scar's physical features, including his coloring.

That said, I do respect other commenters' views, and I don't consider them stupid for being offended. Notice that none of them is saying mean things to the artist or calling him a bad person -- they're just pointing out a possible problem they, personally, found with the picture.

TL;DR -- you're just going to call me ridiculous anyway, aren't you?

RadioActiveRedhead In reply to NeriSiren [2013-03-25 05:31:41 +0000 UTC]

I don't see anyone shaming RDJ for his part in that one movie where he played a black man. That's "brown facing" by your standards. Thats even putting it in a "humorous" light.

This, however, is beautiful usage of makeup to create a masterpiece that shows a character as they are depicted in a cartoon.
