That is cultural segregation and "THAT" is not okay, that is what is causing animosity, because some racists are open about it and then you have you. You think you are being helpful but you are only causing more trouble because when you point out something innocent and call it 'brownfacing' it hinders 'cultural appropriation' which helps integrate cultures and form coexistence.
In 'this' case though I don't think this is even relevant since she made her 'face' 'brown' because Scar has 'brown' 'fur' and just to point out, if she was dressing up as mystique from xmen and painted her face 'BLUE' you wouldn't have said 'ANYTHING'

umm i have a feeling you dont really understand how damaging brownfacing is. the problem with brownfacing is that she literally put on skin darker than her own as if it were a costume. skin tones are not a costume. races are not costumes. to assert so is... racist. there are real living people who have skin this dark and they can't wash it off the way she can. she is exerting privilege (because at the end of the day she can wash it off and will still be light & will benefit from her lightness) as well as insensitivity to the struggles of those who have natural dark skin. its disrespectful and should never be encouraged, even if it's cosplay.
btw? blue people aren't oppressed. neither are spotted people or purple people or any other funny skin tone you will make up in order to justify this sort of nonsense.
also lol. cultural appropriation doesn't help form coexistence. it helps cheapens and dehumanize real people and real cultures. ask any native american how they feel about the appropriation of headdresses, for example. it's not cultural segregation to say STEALING (and it IS stealing since no one ever ASKS if they can wear these things, they just TAKE as if they are ENTITLED to) from other cultures you do NOT belong to is WRONG. 4real.
even in places like the united states, a supposed 'melting pot', there is still extreme racism being exerted. don't fool yourself.

So what you are saying is that, 'brown skin' is a bad thing, and because I'm Native American and have a dark complexion, I should be outraged about anyone with light skin that goes and tans themselves because I can't make my own skin any lighter. Oh wait, I can, with makeup. Oh, but wait, that would be wrong too right? Because I'd be stealing from the BEAUTIFUL white people that benefit from their lightness. That's a crock of bull. That would be like saying people with straight hair shouldn't curl their hair, because my hair won't straighten due to the stubborn thick hair of my ethnicity.
No. I don't think it's right to exploit cultural staples for fashion or costume. But I do think that if a person has respect for that culture should be able to show their respect. And as far as skin color, I don't believe skin color should mean, ANYTHING. We are all human and have attained our skin tones in one way or another and should not make us grateful or ashamed or accepted or shunned. A lot of the time skin color and race has absolutely nothing to do with culture. And yes, there are still a majority out there that don't think so, that people should be segregated for their race, color, culture. But there are still those that are empathetic to those who are being wronged by these racists and want to share in the rich cultural history of all the peoples that populate our world. So should we not extend our acceptance to not only those oppressed by bigots but also to those that are judged for accepting into their lives diversity?

... no?? i am not saying brown skin is a bad thing at all. im sorry if it seemed like that, thats not what i meant. i mean that, in the grand scale of the world, people of color (especially darker-skinned poc) are actively oppressed for their race. by putting dark makeup on a light person not only is it disrespectful and treats race like a costume, but it has roots in history of minstrel shows. you've heard of those, right? it's impossible to separate darkening of your skin from those extremely racist shows, even if your intentions are good. also i really dont think brownfacing has any sort of similarity to straight-haired folk curling their hair.
they can show their respect but i've rarely seen respect shown to these cultures and this picture definitely isn't an example. if the cosplayer is showing respect to a culture, what culture is it? it's scar, a fictional character from TLK, which took place in africa. would it be the "african" culture? seeing as africa is a continent with at least 57 countries (and each of those 57 countries has a tremendous wealth of different cultures even within them and TLK never specified where), it would be hard to show respect to 'african' culture without having to resort to stereotypes. and we can agree that it's completely wrong to stereotype people, right? africa as a continent has received such strong stereotyping so it would be doubly required to be respectful about representing characters from there.
we don't live in a vacuum. i know you don't want skin color to mean anything (the colorblind ideology is actually oppressive - here's an article about it ) and while that's a nice thought, it DOES. in this day and age, skin color does have a bearing. and it's wrong that it does. but it DOES. and to say it doesn't is turning a blind eye to the struggles of people of color in this extremely white supremacist society we live in today.

I agree with all of this, but it is my Firm belief that you should not hold an idea of someone from the first time you see them, whether it be for skin tone, hair or eye color, sex or orientation, cultural attire, or disabilities. I do not believe people should just be blind to color, but instead for our society to be better educated on and have more respect for cultures and peoples that are different from us. If anyone should be blamed for dis-education culturally is some of the movie producers and studios that misrepresent these cultures including but definitely not limited to Disney & Warner Bros. And to think, their shows are produced for children. So it's a wonder why this country is so polluted in guiltless and blind racism.

I agree. I just... I want to love it, but wearing my skin color like a costume really puts a damper on my enjoyment.
Good job, I guess?
