Gojira/Godzilla, King of the Monsters was always the darkest in the series. Godzilla 1984, GMK and probably the new Godzilla 2014 really did push the idea forward. "Peabrain or not, the King is never going down".

That is true. The original was probably the darkest, but I did think Godzilla 1984 had its moments of darkness. Specifically when Godzilla uses his atomic ray on the military troops lined up outside the bay.
