A great book series indeed. And the Ousters were always my favorite faction. Down with the stagnant Hegemony of Man!

Same with me. The Ousters are like a Kardashev II version of the Na'vi from Avatar.

I never particularly liked the pacifist, startree-building Ousters from the Endymion duology... They got slaughtered by the Pax by the billions and couldn't do a thing about it. Those aren't the Ousters I knew and loved!
The Ousters from the original Hyperion duology were so much cooler and more competent: transhumanist, technologically superior to the Hegemony and more than willing to fight... and just one of their migration clusters was capable of completely devastating the majority of the Hegemony fleet in the Hyperion system.

The Pax were only able to slaughter them because of their speed advantages from the Gideon teleport-drive and FTL missiles, without which they can only fight theΒ Ousters to a standstill. Aenea stripped the Pax of their mobility advantage by spreading her DNA sacrament and teaching her followers to Farcast, sometimes taking their ships with them!
By the way, I feel one could possibly do a Hyperionverse/Cultureverse crossover in which the Aeneans, Ousters, and the friendlier AI's making up Ummon become for all intents and purposes, founders of The Culture and in effect, turn the Hyperion Cantos into a prequel to the Cultureverse.

Hmm, IIRC, most Culture stories take place in the past, and there's no freecasting in the Cultureverse. The Cultureverse "humans" aren't really Earth humans but members of some kind of Galaxy wide species. It's been a while since I've read any Culture books so I could be wrong.
Freecasting is pretty much a narrative dead end anyway, eliminating all need for spaceships, exploration and the very possibility of conflict.
(I'm definitely not a fan of the Endymion duology. It has its moments, but ultimately it destroys the Hyperionverse as a place that could support further narratives.)

I read Orphans of Helix. I honestly couldn't get into the four books I read The fall of Hyperion and it felt like he was skipping swaths of his own story.

I am a HUGE fan of the Hyperion Cantos, and I must tell you that you have done an AWESOME job with your Ouster design. This seems very practical, well thought out interpretation of an Ouster warrior, you certainly have an eye for this sort of design. Absolutely wonderful work here.
