did these ants try to defend their aphids by shooting formic acid when you approached?

Do you know why they farm them? We had some common black ants farming them on a branch of brambles in our garden and I was absolutely fascinated by it!

yes.The aphids excrete a suger like substance which the ants love.They like it that much they even protect the aphids from any insects trying to eat them like ladybirds.

Ah yeah, I put a ladybird on a branch of brambles filled with aphids and the ants pushed him off. Poor ladybird.

As far as i know they milk them, cause the aphids produce honeydew.
It's a great shot. I've never seen them in such detail.
In our garden their are a lot of such farms, but not for a long time, cause I hate aphids destroying beautiful plants.

Thanks john.It was 1 X..I tryed to lower shutter speed and raise iso to get a bit of light in background..Fec was on -2/3 and.i raised exposure in raw by 1 stop.

I know what you mean..try shooting in the feild and you brush your ear over a twig covered in them..it wasnt pretty..lol i was itching all the way home till i had a shower
