I keep telling myself that those "pupils" are just optical illusions caused by compound eyes.
It never works.

I love the angle here! The fact that you can see the rest of this damselfly's body makes them one of my favorites in your gallery (and you have quite a lot of shots that I like). Although odd, I also like how a bit of the thing he's perched on (rock? wood?) is in focus as well.

I can't get over that you are shooting an aperture of f/11 and the dof is still so shallow.

Keep in mind that damselflies are pretty tiny.

That is what is so surprising. That you may have to crank the aperture up to f/18 just to see detail into parts of the thorax from beyond the eyes was just so surprising to me. What do you think Sandy?

I don't even know if my thinking is correct because I'm not only an amateur, but I'm completely self-taught and I've just learned by doing.
But, when an object's that small and your lens is so close, even if you amp it up past f/18, it doesn't help too much. Some of these macro photographers take three exposures, at three separate distances, that are then all combined together so that you can get all parts of the insect into focus (like HDR).
Scott, if you read this, would you mind correcting me if I'm wrong, or explaining better. Thanks!

I have heard of those which that feature is available in the new CS4 but I just didn't realize that a macro shot requires to use a combination of macros to amp the dof.

I only have PS3 and I don't use that technique. I just take regular photos, but that's why the dof isn't very much in mine.

I have cs4 but I typically take landscape shots so I haven't implemented into my workforce yet
