I never played as a mage (I rather deal with enemies up close & personal) but I always supported them

really? never thought of just trying it out? I can understand why if you tried it in Dragon Age: Origins. I found it boring back then when my mage only does point, cast and shoot all through out the game.

Of course I though about it, but i'm usually not that good with casters
But I will try it, once i'm done with my recent Mass Effect 2 playthrough (gotta get a complete save ready for ME3, even if that is a ways away).

yup, and seriously irritated that they pushed it back to Q1 2012
I would advise against playing ME2 if you haven't played ME1 before
Importing a savegame really pays off in terms of continuity and immersion
