During the 14 years between the end of the war and the events of the New Era, Kisara took it upon herself to understand what sage mode was as a whole and how to wield it. After doing research, she and Kantarou followed a map to Ryuuchi Cave. When she arrived, she was interrogated by the snake sage. He had been there for so long, he was merged with the terrain. He immediately smelled Orochimaru's scent on her and asked who she was.

She told him her name, kneeling in respect. She explained what happened to her, and why she desired to better herself using sage power. The sage thought it over and sensed her unusual chakra natures. He gave her a trial period of one month in which he explained that she would be put into a coffin and wrapped in white snakes similar to bandages for the dead.

She would then be put underground in a state of complete immobility and she would be as still as death itself with her hands in the sign of the snake for that entire month. The coffin would be put into the ground in the area of the cave that contained the strongest presence of nature energy. Using her abilities, she would need to learn to intake and release nature energy willingly throughout her entire body to keep herself alive until the month's end when she would be dug up and released as a capable student or an utter failure.

Similar to how the failed sages of Mount Myoboku had turned to stone when attempting to become sages, if Kisara could not continuously intake and release nature energy she would turn to stone and die, failing her test. If she survived, she would be trained for 10 years in the art of sage mode. The sage even agreed to teach her out to fight better without sage mode as he believed she was more spiritual than physical in her abilities overall. She agreed to this full well of the risk. She was wrapped and buried, and dug up a month later with her life intact. As a result, she was able to begin her 10-year training.

Rigorously and diligently, she ate like a snake, behaved like a snake, trained with the snakes, and slept alongside them in order to become one with them. Snakes were a symbol of protection, wisdom, good luck, strength, and change. Once she came to accept this fact for such a morbid animal she'd been exposed to for many years, when the 10th year had come to pass, she was pronounced a full-fledged sage. Her sage mode granted her little physical changes. Her eyes would remain blue but obtain slits like a snake while her tongue would make her more adept at using sensing abilities, creating barriers, and allowing herself to use better escape techniques.

Her most prominent ability in sage mode was the fact she could branch her chakra into two large, separate snakes. Kantarou would merge with her body and split into two from her back. Her chakra is also able to branch out into smaller snakes that allow for sensory abilities and barriers, as well as, grabbing and halting enemies for her allies. Kantarou became merged with her body and split into a yin and yang of himself. Due to sage mode taking a lot of her stamina, she usually uses it for support to lengthen her time of use and avoids attacking with nature energy and chakra unless her attack is guaranteed to hit.
