Happy 1st Anniversary, JOKER!! here is a small painting study and a couple of rough sketches to celebrate!

i first watched Joker over dinner with my family. none of us had any prior knowledge going in - we really thought it was gonna be your typical superhero/villain marvel-esque action film, but instead we got a dark, artistic social commentary on mental health, class difference, and gun violence. it was honestly a really hard watch, because having to see this guy get beaten down over and over both mentally and physically in the first half isn’t a fun time. and although you know he is also in the wrong when he starts to fight back, it is strangely cathartic to watch him ‘werewolf and go wild.’

when it was over, i think we were all collectively alienated at our expectations being completely blindsided. and while my family didn’t really enjoy it, i actually fell in love with it. i think it’s a masterpiece, honestly.
