Description Yaay my first tutorial
This is my walkthrough for how I painted our friendly neighbor Scorpion...

Tools: PaintTool SAI, using Pencil, Marker and Blur tools.

Steps:

1 - Basic sketch + Black outlines, I try not to keep my lines perfect since I add them as I go.

2 - Base colours, make sure to add them under your lines.

*From here on every layer goes over your line layer*

3 - Small highlights to black clothing as well as adding basic shading to the skin (I use 2 different tones for shading). I also re-painted the yellow quilted part over the line layer and added lines for the quilts.

4 - I add a 2nd base colour to the gold armor as well as hightlights and some shadows.

5 - Add more highlights to the black clothing, add basic lighting to the yellow cloths (I used one colour for that, but for the less bright parts I just use the marker tool).

6 - Added more hightlights to the skin as well as yellow cloths and added the skull on the belt.

7 - Gave sharper highlights to the armor and added blu-ish tones for shading on the yellow quilts.

8 - Added studs and more lighting to the skin (i get very picky with the skin). Yumm donuts.

9 - Background

10 - Final touch-ups

Hope this can help

Oh, this is actually a great tutorial! I've seen a bunch of tutorials about "painting above the sketch" and somehow the whole process in them is not as easy to follow as with yours. Thanks for making it!

Awesome! I'm not much of a Photoshop person, but I'm alright with Sai. Anyway keep up the good work even though it's already enough LOL. I hope I see Smoke more, but I understand that you're busy.

I tried it.. and I fail!! It's not as bold or dynamic, maybe my tastes are a bit to the soft shading...

MadiBlitz In reply to estewanii [2012-02-09 18:37:35 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, instead of solf shading try like a cell-shading, thats what i do when i get stuff

estewanii In reply to MadiBlitz [2012-02-12 13:27:17 +0000 UTC]

oh cell shading is good.. I'll try it on my next pic

MadiBlitz In reply to estewanii [2012-02-12 18:27:33 +0000 UTC]

Try the cell shading first, then add soft shading overtop of it on a seperate layer and jsut blend them together ^^

estewanii In reply to MadiBlitz [2012-03-09 15:35:43 +0000 UTC]

blend as in using the blending option or just merging the layers down?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MadiBlitz In reply to estewanii [2012-03-09 15:48:13 +0000 UTC]

merging then blending together

Is 1 a digital sketch or a pencil scanned?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MadiBlitz In reply to superhermit [2012-01-30 22:57:41 +0000 UTC]

Its a pencil sketch but I go over it again with harder black digital lines, mostly along the outline
