Description
The pair thundered through the forest, weaving in and out between the trees at a breakneck pace. The rider bent low over the horse´s neck; there were far too may low branches here, and with no leaves they were even harder to spot in the gloom and darkness than usual. She´d already been de-seated once and had no wish to repeat the experience. Least of all right now.For at the moment the forest around them was neither gloomy nor dark.
She did kind of wish for the familiar feeling of a weapon in hand. But that was one of the first things she´s 'lost' after entering the forest. The scythe had been caught on something and ripped out of her hand at an earlier run.
Maybe that was just as well - it wasn´t really the right kind of environment for it, not really. It might not help much, not here. Whatever it was that was out there was either insubstantial or very good at hiding. The certainly were good at mind-games. But useful or not, she still missed it.
Hollow´s ears were pinned to his skull. His hooves struck the moist ground. The floor of the forest didn´t seem to be able to make up its mind; if it wanted to be spongy moss, packed earth or half-decomposed leaves, and occasionally tried for all three at once. The stallion had already skidded around several turns, trying to outrun whatever was behind them.
Erupting into the glade, the way ahead obscured by the mist that enveloped almost everything, the two of them didn´t even bother slowing down.
Behind them, drifting on the non-existing wind, a pale, eerie laughter, high pitched and cold, followed as the light danced in and out of focus among the trees, bathing the woods in a flickering red obscurity.

OOOO what a creepy-good image :3 Reminds me of sleepy hollow a bit! The story that goes with this really adds to the image too. The colours, style and just everything in this work really well together to give a very eerie and spooky feeling. The only critique point here i think is that the rider looks a little detached from the horse. Theres nothing really to indicate that she is actually riding the horse. I think if we could see some hand or a head or something it might help just connect the two. Other than that great work

Sleepy Hollow is a good creepy vibe for this, thanks
Good point there...I was kind of going for the 'can't really tell what it is' kind of impression, but it looks like it works better in movies than it does in paintings (or mine at least ) Some of the trouble might stem from that the entire figure is black. I'm sure there's some way of making parts stand out, I'll have to keep working on it

Oohh this is a bit different than what I'm used to seeing, which is nice! I really like the background, as it adds to the anger/worrisome feel. You're anatomy is very well done, not much I can find to fix there except for the far back leg. It seems a bit constricted and shorter than the other one. The edges of the horse and the rider seem a bit messy, but I'm not sure if that was your intent or not. I really like the story, it's very well written! Altogether wonderful piece.

Glad you like it, I was hoping it'd come across as that
Edges again...they just don't seem to agree with me. I wonder if there is some sort of 'magic' way of being able to draw them, well...non jagged and non messy? Maybe it's just practice... some of it is intentional and some of it is definitely not. I'll need to work on that.

yay, and here comes the commenting :'D
I really like the red colouring you chose for the bg! Together with the story (well, without too ^^) this scary light really makes you wonder what evil whatever creature-thing is following, chasing them! You did also a good job with adding the red glow tho horse and rider. Those two somewhat make me thing about the black riders from The Lord of the Rings. I like that But I like cloaks in general
The only thing I think could be improved is, that I actually can't really see where the cloak ends and where the horse beginns. So you could try to make those parts less blurred ...or so ^^
The detailed brindle is fantastic btw
So all in all: fantastic work

And when I was drawing this I was worrying I was going overboard with the whole 'effect'. All that worry for nothing
Ah, yes...you caught me. The Ringwraiths 'look and feel' was exactly what I was hoping for with these two.

This picture is really awesome! The red background/shading and highlighting really adds to the 'scary' effect!
One thing I noticed is that the rider seems a little strange because you can't exactly tell what she is. She just looks like a bunch of folding cloth. The folds and everything are really well done but you can't really tell if she's human or if it's just a cloak there. It looks really good, that's the only thing I noticed!
I really loved your mist effect to the left of the picture and how it comes around in front of the horse. It also adds a very mysterious/spooky effect. Good job!

I'm relieved to hear that. It was very much an experiment, and a very nervous one at that I'm not very comfortable doing scary/spooky drawings in general.
Actually, you spotted it perfectly. That "is that a human, a cloak, something else " That's exactly what I was aiming for, so that's all good

Haha well yes, you did a really good job with that. I haven't done many 'scary' drawings either so I'm with you there!
And okay, if that's what you're aiming for then that's good.

It's certainly different from the normal drawings...much more reliant on athmosphere. Still, practice makes perfect, as they say (eventually anyway, in the meantime it just makes us frustrated

This is abselutly horrific, and I just love it!!! The horse has a devilish-hellish look to it and I love the design you put on it, as well as the coloring look. In the corner it looks like rays of blood streaming down, and gives me a chill up my spine. Te horns are cool and I like the wild look the horse is giving the viewers.
In the future you could have him battleing something or someone, like a giant or a hellhound. That would be stupendus

Great Seeing as they're lost in a haunted wood, horrific is a wonderful way to describe it. So happy that managed to shine through.
Hehe...there might be a predator or two lurking in the future here

Scythes just aren't a great weapon for woodlands. However, long lances are -- where there's wood, there's a lance in the making.
The red glow makes everything look super-spooky. Mae and her steed don't look terribly weak either. I'd think twice, if I was a monster, about bothering them.

They tend to need a bit of room to be effective, that's for sure. Who knows, maybe she'll run into it again? This place can probably throw up all sorts of things at you, so stranger things probably happen than your posessions appearing in strange places where you most definately did not put them/loose them.
Hollow prefers flight to fight if he can, which means that when he does finally get serious about something it usually takes the opponent completley by surprise He's definately the 'stalking your prey' type compared to the one making all the noise and driving them forwards.
Glad you like the spookyness. I wanted to make something very surreal for this

Oooh... ominous red glow, very nice touch. I love the rush of movement, particularly with the cloak, and Hollow's pose... though I really want to give him a hug. Poor darling. Is that the tree you mentioned? Hehe. I think it turned out well but I'm envisioning it springing from the ground and trying to eat people. I look forward to seeing more of this adventure! Try to stay in one piece.

When being chased by a glowy redness...best not to stop and ask too many questions. Mae's happier with something she can whack on the head until it stops wriggling
aww...he'll have to get an extra treat for tonight's work. He doesn't really like spooky stuff either. I'm sure he'd appreciate a hug though.
oh yeah, that's the tree alright. Still not happy with it, but you're right, it does look a bit like the evil cousin of an escaped Ent, doesn't it

A very good survival strategy! Hehe. I'm with Mae on that one... I prefer whack-able things too. Hehe.
Several treats by the end of this I think.
It very much reminds me of evil trees in video games... and some that existed in my backyard when I was young. You think they're spooky when you see them... but as you pass, a chill runs up your spine, and I could always imagine them springing to life to eat me.

Works with everything except ghosties and some forms of demons and djinns...and everyone knows there's no such things...right...right?
Many, many treats, and a good cuddle. Hopefully they'll both get through it unscathed...
Oh yes...and then you were walking away from them you were always, almost, looking out from the corner of your eye just to make sure to be ready to run in case the thing actually did come to life and start reaching out for you. *shudders* There is such a thing as an overactive imagination...

It's like the 'here be dragons' at the edges of maps. They're fine as long as they're a long way away
It certainly will be interesting, that's for sure. Very glad I joined. I don't recall ever doing that, but that might be more a case of selective memories on my part. I do remember that there was a washing machine that I was terrified would come to life and chase me through the house.
The strangeness of a mind at any age...

I would have loved to be on a ship back when maps had those... "Where are we, Captain?" "See that monstrous serpent there?" "Yes." *grim smile*
It's amazing we survived being terrorized by trees, washing machines, navigators from Dune... At least the strangeness keeps things interesting!

As long as they weren't sighting them in the sea...just the map, I'd agree
Heck, without strangeness, everyday life just gets too boring. Talk about indoctrination
