I think you're right. She should have had a pencil in her ear throughout the episode.

You know, actualy, i can't remember any living person, who placed a pencil like that not for curiosity's sake β would it stick here or not. Usualy if you need a pencil/pen on yourself, you put it in a pocket. But horses don't have ones, so it's perfectly legit.
