Description I have been in an interesting head-space lately. Last night things finally got to the surface, and this was one of the results. Full screen view adds a lot to this piece.

This is a section of a 24"x20" canvas. I just can't scan the whole thing.

There was a rejected painting on it before I started, to which I added layers of acrylic paint. After building up a few strata, I decided I wasn't happy with it so I carved at it with a palette knife... That showed off the depth in a way that the previous layering hadn't.

When I was still at MacEwan, my instructor Darcey said something that stayed with me and were definitely in my mind last night:

"Trust the process to get you through."

I thought so. I struggle with wanting to control the art too much some times, and then it isn't gratifying. The forays into abstract (or really, just less-controlled art) have been weird and new for me. But liberating.

I find it's about finding the balance between looking at what you're doing and not. it's great to embrace that freedom of not knowing then to discover something that you could have never imagined. weird but true.

i try to control shape and form into composition that is ultimately deemed "abstract". interesting to me as my process is usually quite meticulously and deliberately controlled. all conscious thought takes root in the sub-conscious so it's a good exercise to let your sub-conscious take over and let the imagery unfold before your eyes. but it's always about knowing when to bring it back and let it go. as with everything in life, balance is the key ~
