Description
And here's my list of my favorite fictional fathers/father figures.1. Geppetto (Pinocchio) When he felt lonely, Geppetto took the time to create his own special marionette boy and name him "Pinocchio". One night, Geppetto made a wish, and the Blue Fairy brought his little puppet to life! Even though Pinocchio isn't his child by blood, Geppetto still loves him like a son, and even goes great lengths to go out and find him when he is missing (even going into the belly of a whale). After several tries at being a good boy, Pinocchio ultimately succeeds in fulfilling his father's wish by sacrificing himself to save Geppetto, and then being resurrected as a real boy by the Blue Fairy.
2. Marlin (Finding Nemo) Ever since the death of his wife, Coral, and their 400 unborn children, Marlin did everything he could to protect his only son, Nemo. Even though he starts off as an overprotective helicopter parent, Marlin is put to the test of finding his stolen son, who was taken by a scuba diver (later revealed to be a dentist with a fish tank in his office); Marlin teams up with a forgetful tang named Dory, and keeps his promise to find his son, while facing many of his fears. In the sequel, Finding Dory, Marlin is still the lovable and caring father he was in the first film. ^^
3. Papa Q. Bear (The Berenstain Bears) While he has his faults and tends to be very accident-prone, Papa Bear still means well and loves his wife, Mama, and children, Brother and Sister. Sometimes, he's the one who gives the best advice in a few stories (like "Learn About Strangers", or "The Messy Room" when Mama goes Joan Crawford). I also appreciate his silly antics, and how he sometimes comes in very handy when solving mysteries on the show.
4. Boris Goosenov (Balto) This Russian snow goose took the young wolf-dog pup under his wing (no pun intended) after he lost his mother, and the two have been inseparable ever since. While he makes me laugh with his silly antics, I also appreciate how Boris likes Balto for who he is, even when the citizens of Nome or the other dogs in town (except Jenna) put him down. Boris is also willing to accompany Balto in his adventure to bring the medicine to Nome and save many lives from the diphtheria epidemic.
5. Charles "Chas" Finster, Sr. (Rugrats) Before there was Marlin, Chuckie's dad had the willpower to raise the little red-haired "fraidy-cat" after his wife, Melinda, died from an unknown illness. Of all the dads on this show, I really like Chas the best, because even though he and the other adults go through crazy shenanigans while the babies have their own adventures, he is still a good father to Chuckie; he even gives Chuckie a new stepmother and stepsister at the end of "Rugrats in Paris: The Movie", when he marries Kira Watanabe, and Kimi becomes Chuckie's new little stepsister.
6. Mufasa (The Lion King) Simba's father is really one of the best Disney dads out there for good reasons. He teaches his son about what to do and what not to do when running an African kingdom of animals; he loves Simba with all his big heart; and his spirit lives on, even after he is tragically killed in a wildebeest stampede by his jealous brother, Scar. Kudos to James Earl Jones for giving a magnificent performance of Mufasa, especially in the original 1994 animated film!
7. Merlin (The Sword in the Stone) This wise old wizard is a great father figure to the young King Arthur (a.k.a. Wart), unlike his adoptive father and brother, Sir Ector and Sir Kay, who treat him more as a servant than a family member. Anyway, Merlin does his best at educating Arthur/Wart, with the help of his magic; he even uses his magic to turn Arthur into various animals to see the world from those species' points of view. And then, there's the wizard's duel with Madam Mim; while Mim uses her dark magic to change into various predatory animals, Merlin cleverly turns into a variety of species to outwit Madam Mim. That teaches Arthur that "knowledge and wisdom is the real power."
8. Papa Mousekewitz (An American Tail) This jolly Jewish mouse is the father to Tanya, Fievel, and Baby Yasha. I like how at the beginning, when the family celebrates Hanukkah, Papa gives his children items that he used, and is willing to give up for Tanya and Fievel (Tanya gets a little scarf, while Fievel gets his father's blue hat). He also makes his family happy by playing his violin, and telling stories. Although he and Mama believe that Fievel is dead for most of the film after their son gets thrown overboard from their ship to America, Papa still keeps his precious memories of Fievel until the very end, when the young mouse is happily reunited with his family.
9. Tug (Brother Bear) As the leader of a group of bears at the Salmon Run, Tug serves as a good "papa bear" (pun totally intended) figure for both Koda and Kenai. Voiced by the late but great Michael Clarke Duncan (the miracle man John Coffey from The Green Mile), Tug warmly welcomes Kenai (an Inupiat man-turned bear) to the Salmon Run, and teaches him of their ways, making Kenai feel closer to Koda and the other bears. Then, after Kenai makes the decision with Great Spirits to remain a bear forever, he still keeps in touch with Tug and the other bears in the sequel, Brother Bear 2 (one of the better Disney sequels IMO).
10. Ned Flanders (The Simpsons) While Homer is an oafish fool with a bad temper (that doesn't mean I hate him), his neighbor, Ned Flanders is more down-to-earth, religious, friendly, and "okily-dokily".
11. Professor Utonium (The Powerpuff Girls) This man of science is one of Cartoon Network's best father figures in my opinion. When crime was rising the city of Townsville, the Professor put together sugar, spice, and everything nice to create the "perfect little girl" to improve Townsville. However, back when Mojo Jojo was still living with the Professor, he pushed the man and made him accidentally add in Chemical X to the experiment, thus creating Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup. Even before the girls got used to their superpowers, the Professor still loved them - and always has.
12. Maurice (Beauty and the Beast) While all the other villagers chastise about Belle's intelligence and love for books, her father, Maurice, appreciates his daughter for who she is. He is also willing to sacrifice his own life to live out the rest of his days as a prisoner to the Beast, but Belle instead takes his place, where she eventually warms up to the Beast and falls in love with him. Maurice also takes action to go out and rescue his daughter on his own when no one will listen to his cries for help. He is really another one of Disney's best dads!
13. King Nedakh (Atlantis: The Lost Empire) He is truly one of Disney's most underrated fathers! For instance, at the beginning, when his wife sacrifices herself to protect part of the city from flooding, the King shields his daughter, Kida, from the blinding light the Heart of Atlantis creates, and thus leaves his eyes permanently scarred. Thousands of years later, an expedition crew arrives, and Kida welcomes the visitors (especially Milo Thatch
14. Zeus (Hercules) As the King of the Greek Gods, Zeus still watches over his son, Hercules, even after Hercules is stolen by Hades' henchmen, Pain and Panic, to made mortal so that Hades can kill him. But luckily, Hercules did NOT drink every drop of the mortal liquid, so he still had his massive strength to fight off monsters and do hard chores for his foster parents. Anyway, Zeus appreciates his son for who he is, and is always on his side whenever trouble comes; he even lets Hercules give up his deity at the end to be with his love interest, Megara.
15. Hector Rivera (Coco) Even before (SPOILER) he was revealed to be Miguel's long-forgotten great-great-grandfather, Hector still serves as a great friend and father figure to Miguel, after the young boy is whisked to the land of the dead while playing the late Ernesto De La Cruz's guitar. Hector not only cracks me up with his bony antics (no puns intended), but he is also very intelligent, and will not stop to cross the marigold bridge to see his daughter, Coco, before she forgets about him. But after Coco dies at the end, she is happily reunited with her father, and Hector can still visit his great-great-grandson.
