I too like to use the feelings of colour and emotion within my work, and sometimes it works really well, ad sometimes it's okay - lol
How do you focus on the facial expressions and the eyes so well? Do you have a definitive idea of what you want to achieve, or do you play around with it alot till you see something you like?

well, I use reference, but I don't depend on it that much, when it comes to this I like to experiment a lot, especially with colors and light

I love experimenting with colours and light too - I've dabbled a little bit with apophysis 7x (a fractal render program) and I've been very pleased with the results from a visual pov.
I have a friend whose a very talented traditional pencil artist, who tells me that when he has the eyes where he needs them, then the rest of the portrait falls into place.
