Around Steinheid (Thuringia, Germany), there are many shut-down entrances to old gold mines. On Good Friday some years ago, I went on a guided tour there. The main period of Steinheidian gold mining was in the 16th century, but rumor has it that there are still golden statuettes of the twelve apostles burried somewhere in this region. But alas, I guess you shouldn't give too much about such rumors... should you?

Above the entrance, there is a whetstone quarry (I have to add this to prove that I paid attention on the guided tour!).
