Joe and Diggins were buddies!
Anyways, my head cannon is Joe, when younger, was a gun-ho adventure-needy exploration-seeking teen who would jump at any chance of adventure or exploring, while Diggins was a bit more socially awkward and hesitant about stuff. Their personalities would rub off on each other as the years went by.
I also can see them becoming protective of each other.
