Description
This is for ~acidshadow as an add-on to a comment I made on one of her deviations. This is the basic breakdown of those tails as I see them. (Yes, yes I do think a lot about anatomy when looking at drawings. = P) Of course, the "parts" aren't really straight like this, but seriously. Ahem. The bending thing: You've got this going, but not all the time. Behind the wing, I'm mostly thinking of the top part, since most of the "hidden" part of the tail is straight. Still, as I pointed out you should still be able to see the edges of each individual part.
Of couse, this model assumes that each... I'm just going to call them cups. That each cup has a point at the middle of it's bottom end that is static, i.e. it's possible movements are centered around this point. Think ball-and-socket joint. I don't know much about anatomy, but it makes sense to me; this way, contracting muscles would be able to curve the tail at each individual joint (if you pull one of the corners of that shape up there down, the entire thing would tilt), meaning each cup could be tilted in a different direction, making the tail rather flexible. Or maybe it's more like a dog's tail dressed in cups, what do I know? Anyway, there's my impression and theory. Hopefully at least one person other than me can understand what I mean.

most of the muscles for a tail are actually in the body, they control the tail via a pulley-like system of tendons, similar to the fingers, but yes, you can feel the individual vertebrae which make up a tail (wow, that was random)

I wasn't really thinking of muscles as far as I remember - I was trying to explain to someone else what their tail design would/should look like when bent.

thankyou for this. I'm gonna have to fave it so i can go back to it
i do see what you mean now, by the tail being too smoothe. I really have to look into shadow's tail desings in comparrison to animal anotomy. i think shadow's tail is more like an insects, but that shouldn't change the movement in this design in comparision to a mammal. I'm going to have to really think about this.
thnakyou so much for this- this will really help!

You're welcome! I think I heard somewhere that the difference between animals and some insects is that the insects basically have their skeleton on the outside. Muscles connect to the hard shell whereas in animals they connect to the bones and are protected by the skin.

yeah, i'm thinking about how far the muscle inside an insects tail would move etc.

*nods* There should be websites about it... Though you might have to sort through a jungle of very long and possibly Latin words to find what you're looking for. = P
