Description
My original characters from left to right: Naomi, Code and Lance.Currently in the process of writing (or attempting to write) a comic book featuring these guys as side characters. The setting is meant to be a futuristic city, one that's a little more rundown than it appears in this picture but eh, it's a start. I tend to avoid inorganic scenery like cityscapes because who the hell enjoys straight lines and perspective work. Crazy people, that's who.
Critiques are most welcome! Would especially love some tips on colour theory and lighting because I don't have much of an eye for that stuff.

This is an amazing piece in my opinion; the anatomy is very consistent and the character designs are well made. I especially love the background because it helps to convey the origin for these characters and helps show us, the viewer, the bizarre world that these characters live in. I love it!
I can see how you struggle with colour theory and lighting. What I would do, since the background is already very bright and lively, is draw the characters in darker shades/tones to really make them stand out from the background. Think of it this way: the background is a very large spotlight and it is shinning down on the characters. If that is the case, the characters would automatically be of darker shades.
There are a few anatomical mistakes present such as the faces of both the character on the left and right side, however they are small mistakes that can be easily corrected and, with practice, avoided entirely. The mistakes are simple: the woman on the left has a small deformation with her eye and the guy on the right has a sloped forehead. Like I said, with practice, these mistakes can easily be gotten ridden of.

Thank you for the detailed feedback and helpful advice!
I'll be sure to apply all the lighting and colour techniques you mentioned in the future. Much appreciated.

This is super duper cool, amazing and awesome! You really did a great job drawing the background! I love the buildings, the road, the drains, and some futuristic tech stuff! The characters are awesome and beautiful! I love their design and the details are amazing! Their clothes are awesome! I love how you but some shading and lighting! The accessories are cool! All in all you did a great job! They all look like bounty hunters, however in a futuristic version. Well done! Keep up the good work and I hope this made your day! Have a super duper nice day! You're awesome!

So much work put into this piece and it looks very nicely done. I found your piece with ProjectComment.
With lighting, the best way to convey it in a piece is to choose a light source. Where your shadows go, the light must be in contrast to it. Since your shadows seem to be facing forward, there would be light coming from the back, in a way outlining the characters, maybe add a brighter light since the city seems to be really bright, especially with the daylight.
With colour theory, if you want to have your characters stand out more, a really easy way would be to have warmer colours to contrast the colder colours of the city, easily making them pop out on the piece. I wouldn't recommend putting industrial colours on them, like grays and neutrals, unless you would want them to be blended in (if they were spies or something). While you can tell that the centers of the piece are the characters, the middle character doesn't stand out as much as the girl character with the brighter dress, and this is partly because the dress is also too bright for the characters. It would look much better to have a darker colour for her dress and heels, having her clothes match the characters next to her.
The only other problem I see is on the anatomy of the heads. When doing a profile shot of a character, it should be almost as wide as it is in length, because the brain needs room to be there, and not be squashed. I would say that their ears should be a bit higher to nearly reach the height of their eyes. The hair looks a bit stiff on the characters, almost as if they put a lot of gel and hairspray. To fix this, you could try to make the hair flow with the character, at least for the longer hair, or by having less black linework on the hair, using any other colour that corresponds to the hair colour would work.
Hopefully this helps! I truly love your comic style and I really do love this piece.

Thank you very much for the detailed feedback!
Youβve offered some very helpful points about colour theory. I have trouble with this because Iβve given my characters set outfits that I want to remain constant while theyβre in different locations. Problem with that is working out how to avoid clashing with the background each time. Iβll definitely reduce the saturation and brightness of the red dress in future drawings.
Great advice on the head. I had no idea the profile was almost as wide as its length but that makes total sense.
Thanks again for critiquing! I really appreciate it.

I....am....wowed. This is a great piece of artwork. One of the many things that appeals to me in life, is Science Fiction, and the aesthetics of what it brings, signifying what tomorrow might bring to the table. This is a beautiful and futuristic, all rolled into a great picture. The character designs look awesome, and they look like they're ready to kick some ass. It's a great picture where I can highly recommend to anyone who is the fan of the sci-fi gene. I give plenty of phrase to the artist and I hope to see more in the future.

Greetings from ProjectComment !
This is one lovely picture you have here, definitely one that looks inspired from comic books and things of the sort if you ask me.
This could easily be the cover of your comic if these weren't just side characters like you said in the desc.
Now onto the review:
Lineart: Amazing!
- You did a wonderful job with the lines defining the characters, they all mostly have the same lineweight in them, and tend to look winder and narrower in the right places, like the folds in the clothin and the facial features.
- I like how you chose to do the lineart of only the buildings that are located more in the foreground while leaving the ones far away without it, giving a stronger feeling of depth without loosing the feel of a comic. It's kinda funny though how the piece of hardware/machinary in the upper left corner has no lineart in it at all, even though is part of the very foreground.
- In addition to the point above, I noticed how you changed the colour of the lineart on the buildings to a more passive tone gradually to make it fade away in the distance subtlety.
Colors: Great!
- The colour scheme here looks pretty good! although the majority of the colours seem cold and I think there's not enough balance with the warmer colors (like the women's dress, the skin of the three characters, and the two signs in the distance), Perhaps it'd be better to give the characters clothes with warmer colors like red/orange etc.
- I also think the city shouldn't be so similar to the sky in terms of color, (the city has more varied tones but it is still mostly baby blue.)
Shading: Good!
- The lightning in this piece seems to be very faint as there's not a direct source of light (The whole sky seems to be it instead of the sun) so there's little room for shading, however I think what you've done so far is good!
- I like those subtle redder tones on the clothes, even if I'm not sure as to why they're there.
Anatomy: Great!
- All the characters seem to have the right proportions in their bodies. and their poses are well done as too! except for the guy on the right, his stance looks alert and somewhat agressive, but his face looks so relaxed and oblivious it clashes with the pose.
- The jaws of both characters on the sides were defined by a black line, in my personal opinion I think they shouldn't go all the way up to the ear but instead cut off of in the middle like the guy in the center.
- This is something I noticed after looking closely for a couple minutes, but... doesn't it seem like the woman on the left has a slightly deviated gaze? I think she's meant to look at the camera but her right eye (our left) seems to be looking to the opposite side.
Background: Good!
- The whole composition looks very nice on it's own, I like the perspective of the floor the characters are steping on and the many layers of buildings in the distance, but for some reason I feel everything looks too clean and bland in a way, like there are not enough brands or ads to make it feel more alive and stuff.
- The sky doesn't look that good compared to the rest of the city, it's mostly just a flat color with some more clouds of another flat colour (more shading here would've been good), you could also add more clouds in the back of the sky, behind the buildings.
Details:
- I very much like the fashion design of these characters as well, you have a knack for making clothes look real in a way, with al the folds and such. I also like how they differ so much from one char to another!
- I also appreciate the details in the ground like the irregular metalic tiles and the air vents, they surely add to the futuristic setting of the piece.
- The hair style of the guy on the right looks a little weird in comparision to the other two, maybe add more locks of hair and stuff?
- I'm liking those tattoes though!
I can't find anything wrong with your work aside some personal points and the colors chosen in some aspects. This is a very good drawing! keep it up
Have a nice day
