Description Oh boy what to say about this one? It's been a while since I did a big watercolor painting for myself. I'm really happy with it too. This is also a submission for EMG-Zine for it's January subject: The Phoenix. I'm so happy I managed to finish it on time too!

I guess today's been a good day for me! ^___^

[edit] Sorry about this, I have updated the image. The colors are more accurate and there is no line going through the image now, unlike the first version!

=================
9 X 12 watercolor on arches paper. The original is for sale. Send me a DA note if you are interested!
Prints available soon!!

This is my favourite painting of yours. I just keep looking at it and seeing so many wonderful things. The statue looks gorgeous, the hair flowing down and the vines crawling up. And the phoenix is so beautiful, the contrast with the colours on him and the statue is amazing, and his beautiful tail,... I could go on and on, but I'll shut up and just applaud you!

*giggles* Mmhm! Arthur Rackham was an amazing illustrator, ya gotta love his work. And this piece is almost just like something that he'd do too. I love it

wow, it's really amazing!
i find watercolor quite intimidating, hard to control.
just wondering, did you do the lineart first then watercolor or the other way round?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

maina In reply to git2 [2006-06-02 23:27:37 +0000 UTC]

For this painting, I inked the lines with waterproof black ink first and then did the watercolor. I find it much easier that way.
Thank you for your kind comment!

what type of pen do you use to get such fine lines?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

maina In reply to FaerieShadows [2006-05-02 18:08:19 +0000 UTC]

I use a very small nib with my pen. I don't know if there is a number for it. It's pretty much the smalled one available in art stores. Your line will be thinner or thicker depending on how much pressure you put on you nib.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FaerieShadows In reply to maina [2006-05-02 21:47:39 +0000 UTC]

Oo you use the pens with the nibs with the dipping ink...do you ever use any other color than black? your lines are alwasy so beautiful..

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

maina In reply to FaerieShadows [2006-05-02 23:04:56 +0000 UTC]

I tried using colored inks once (mainly blue) but it didn't turn out like I wanted it to be, the colors were too saturated. And if I added water to dilute the colors, it wouldn't flow nicely with the nib. So when I do use colored lineart now, I paint it with watercolor. It takes more time, but it does a much better job.

Thank you for the nice comment! I love working thin and detailed lines! It's takes a little practice to have a nice line with the pens and nibs, but with time anyone can get it right!

The shading on the statue is really successful. I think that is my favorite part of this pice. I also like the thought that went into the placement of the pheonix's feet. They really perch delicately on her arm and fingers. I also like how you handled the watercolors, and included the "bleeding" effect instead of trying to smooth it all out. I think that gives the piece a lot lof life as an illustration. Great work.

Absolutely gorgeous! I love the way that the colours of the statue and phoenix contrast, but the whole of the picture is held together by the subtle tones and highlights you have used.
