Description
Something I've been wanting to try for some time.My attempt at the incomparable Dejah Thoris. I'm not quite sure about the skin coloring - if anyone looks at this and is familiar with ERB's Barsoom books and wants to weigh in on the matter, I'm open to suggestions.
All ready spent more time on this just getting this far than I thought I would on the entire thing.
AI vectors - no mesh... yet, just blends.
Update - decided on the darker skin color and added color into the cloth. Still working.

What tool do you use to create the material?
I really have to sit and try the blends method.

Everything was done with the pen tool - the material is just overlapping shapes with different blend modes (blend modes like lighten, darken, screen, multiply, etc. - not blend tool).
For this type of image, I'm not sure what's better, blends or meshing. Blending is hit or miss. You sometimes have to try a couple different ways before you get close to what you want, but on the plus side it's quicker. A simple mesh might give you the same result, I suppose. There are some interesting tricks that people have come up with using the blend tool - like the tutorial for making pipes on the IW forum.
I've never tried to do a more realistic image using blends, but I imagine it could be done. If you try it out, I'd like to see what you do with it.
